These reports highlighted that the 173rd Airborne Brigade was building its own drones and practicing tactics pioneered by Ukraine. The Associated Press report, which was published in full, stated that the lawmakers sent their letter to Army Secretary Dan Driscoll and Gen. Christopher LaNeve. The lawmakers, including Democratic Sen. Jeanne Shaheen, Republican Sen. Thom Tillis, independent Sen. Angus King, and Republican Rep. Mike Turner, expressed concerns that the decision would limit the Army's ability to learn from allies and hinder modernization efforts. They also sought to understand the data and process behind the change, and whether it was based on Pentagon guidance or an internal Army decision. The Associated Press report noted that Gen. LaNeve ordered the battalion to refocus on its core mission and that this followed Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth's ousting of Army Chief of Staff Gen. Randy George without public explanation. The full report also mentioned that Army Secretary Driscoll submitted his resignation, and that he was an ally of George, with reported tensions with Hegseth."],"centre":["Seven centre-rated reports focused on the lawmakers' request for the Army to explain its decision to stop the 173rd Airborne Brigade's drone warfare specialization.
