**The short version**

- President Donald Trump announced Taiwan will buy 30% of the gas from the Alaska LNG pipeline for 20 years.
- Trump also stated Taiwan would invest $4.4 billion in the project.
- The announcement was made at a rally in Wasilla, Alaska, on October 13, 2026.
- The specific terms of the agreement were not immediately clear.

US President Donald Trump announced on October 13, 2026, that Taiwan has agreed to purchase 30% of the natural gas from the Alaska LNG pipeline project for 20 years. Speaking at a rally in Wasilla, Alaska, Trump also stated that Taiwan would invest $4.4 billion in the project. The terms of this agreement were not immediately clear, and officials did not comment on the announcement.

## Disagreement on clarity of deal terms

While most reports stated that the terms of the deal were not immediately clear, The Hindu noted that Taiwan's Ministry of Economic Affairs had previously stated in March 2025 that its state-owned energy company CPC Corporation "will procure LNG and seek upstream investment participation rights to secure a stable future energy supply for Taiwan." Channel News Asia reported that Taiwan Premier Cho Jung-tai told reporters that the government's job is to "stabilise the entire energy supply and build its resilience, like governments everywhere."

## What the coverage left out

None of the left-rated, centre-rated, or right-rated digests mention the planned operational date of the Alaska LNG project, which The Hindu's full report stated is not expected before 2030. The Hindu's full report also noted the project's planned 1,300-kilometre length and that it is backed by the US group Glenfarne and the state of Alaska.

## How the sides framed it

### Left

- Left-rated reports led with Trump's announcement that Taiwan would buy 30% of the gas from the Alaska LNG pipeline for 20 years and invest $4.4 billion. The Hindu, in its full report, provided context on Taiwan's energy imports, noting that about 38% of its natural gas comes from Australia, 25% from Qatar, and just under 10% from the United States. It also mentioned Taiwan's Ministry of Economic Affairs' prior statement about procuring LNG and seeking investment for a stable future energy supply. CNBC and The Spokesman-Review digests also highlighted the 30% purchase and $4.4 billion investment figures.

### Centre

- Centre-rated reports focused on Trump's announcement of Taiwan's agreement to buy 30% of the LNG from the Alaska pipeline project and invest $4.4 billion. Channel News Asia, in its full report, included comments from Taiwan Premier Cho Jung-tai on the government's role in stabilising energy supply and noted that Taiwan's state energy firm CPC Corp had previously signed an agreement to buy LNG and invest in the project. Digests from PerthNow, Investing.com, Hola News, Political Wire, and Market Screener also reported the 30% purchase and the $4.4 billion investment.

### Right

- Right-rated reports highlighted Trump's announcement that Taiwan would buy 30% of the gas from the Alaska LNG pipeline for 20 years and invest $4.4 billion. Some digests, such as Free Malaysia Today News, included details about Taiwan's current energy import sources, stating that just under 10% comes from the US. Anadolu Ajansı included Trump's quote, "That guarantees a success."
