# Explosion injures students near Lebanon border

*Unexploded ordnance suspected as cause of blast that killed one and wounded up to 20 near Neot Mordechai.*

**Scores for the source reporting** (0-100, assessing the original journalism this article was written from, not this write-up):

- Trust 50 of 100, higher is better. Central claims are attributed to named bodies, but key facts are hedged with 'reportedly' and anonymous sourcing.
- Craft 65 of 100, higher is better. Reporting includes quotes from affected parties and names specific details, but lacks context on why it matters.
- Hype 45 of 100, lower is better. Headlines promise casualties and tragedy, with some sensationalism, but the body of reporting is proportionate.

- The blast, believed to be caused by unexploded ordnance, injured between approximately 8 and 20 people, with at least one fatality reported.

An explosion involving unexploded ordnance occurred on Monday near Neot Mordechai in northern Israel, close to the Lebanese border. Reports indicate between approximately 8 and 20 people were injured, with at least one fatality confirmed by some outlets. Among the injured were students and teachers from the ORT Ma'alot Yeshiva High School, who were on a field trip at the time.

## Disagreement on number of injured

Reports vary on the exact number of individuals injured in the explosion. Al Jazeera states approximately 20 people were injured, with paramedics treating eight casualties in serious and moderate condition and several more in mild condition. The Jerusalem Post reports 13 wounded victims were admitted to Safed's Ziv Medical Center, while Army Radio indicated the IDF identified the device as a Hezbollah cluster munition. Other outlets cite figures ranging from eight to 20 injured.

## What the coverage left out

None of the left-rated reports mention the specific detail from the Jerusalem Post that a preliminary investigation showed evidence that one of the students put an explosive device into his bag, which later detonated. The right-rated reports do not mention the specific detail from Al Jazeera that Prime Minister Netanyahu was heading to the area or that Minister Ben Gvir cancelled a political engagement.

## How the sides framed it

### Left

- Left-rated reports led on the number of injured, with Al Jazeera headlining "At least 20 injured in northern Israel explosion" and Haaretz reporting "12 teens wounded after unexploded shell detonates near Israel's northern border." These reports highlighted the presence of students and teachers among the casualties. Al Jazeera noted the explosion "mobilised" Israel's political echelons, with Prime Minister Netanyahu heading to the area and National Security Minister Ben Gvir cancelling an engagement. Haaretz mentioned Magen David Director General Eli Bin stating the wounded were likely hikers, with several in serious condition.

### Centre

- The centre-rated report from the Jerusalem Post focused on the details of the incident, headlining "Some 13 wounded in explosion of unknown ordnance near Lebanese border." It detailed that students and staff from ORT Ma'alot Yeshiva High School were among the victims and that a preliminary investigation suggested a student put an explosive device into his bag. The report also noted the IDF identified the device as a Hezbollah cluster munition and that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was briefed and holding continuous situational assessments.

### Right

- Right-rated reports frequently highlighted the fatality and the number of injured. Headlines included "1 Killed, 19 Injured in Unexploded Ordnance Blast Near Israel-Lebanon Border: Medics" from Anadolu Ajansı and "Mass casualty incident in explosion near Israel's northern border" from Israel Hayom. These reports, including those from Iefimerida and Protothema, often specified the location as the Ramim Ridge area. Several right-rated outlets, such as Jewish News Syndicate and Arutz Sheva, mentioned the injured were part of a group of schoolchildren or hikers. Israel Hayom stated one person was killed and two others seriously injured, with victims being teachers and students on a field trip.

**Provisional coverage gap:** left. The watch is not closed, so this is not yet a settled blindspot finding.
