**The short version**

- Four service members died and dozens were injured in a fire at CFB Wainwright on Saturday.
- Prime Minister Mark Carney confirmed the fatalities and called the incident one of Canada's worst peacetime tragedies.

Prime Minister Mark Carney confirmed that four service members died and dozens more were seriously injured in a fire at CFB Wainwright in Alberta on Saturday. The blaze occurred around 4 p.m. in a training area on the base. Carney described the incident as one of Canada's worst peacetime tragedies for the armed forces on home soil and ordered flags on federal buildings to be lowered to half-staff.

The Department of National Defence stated that there were no indications the fire resulted from terrorist activity. Military and civilian firefighters battled the blaze through the night. Air ambulances transported patients to hospitals in Edmonton, Wainwright, Calgary, and Red Deer.

## Conflicting reports on initial fatality numbers

Prior to Prime Minister Carney's confirmation, CBC News reported seven fatalities, citing unnamed sources. Channel News Asia noted that Canadian authorities stated the situation was evolving and they would not confirm casualty figures until next of kin had been notified.

## What the coverage left out

None of the left, centre, or right-rated reports printed below mention the specific time the fire occurred on Saturday. The Department of National Defence's statement that there were no indications the fire resulted from terrorist activity was not mentioned in any of the centre-rated digests.

## How the sides framed it

### Left

- Prime Minister Mark Carney confirmed four service members died and dozens were wounded in a fire at CFB Wainwright. The Department of National Defence stated there were no indications of terrorist activity. Local officials and emergency services offered condolences and support.
- CBC News included remarks from a former MP who described the base as integral to the community. A military spouse encouraged blood donations, noting her husband was training at the base but was safe.
- Most reports stated four deaths and dozens injured. Spiegel noted Prime Minister Carney called it one of the army's worst peacetime tragedies. The Independent mentioned CFB Wainwright is a busy training base.

### Centre

- Centre-rated reports focused on Prime Minister Mark Carney's confirmation of at least four deaths and dozens of serious injuries resulting from the fire at CFB Wainwright. They also reported Carney's description of the event as one of the worst peacetime tragedies for Canada's armed forces and his order to lower flags to half-staff. Some reports mentioned the fire occurred in a training area and that firefighters battled it through the night, with some noting fierce winds. Channel News Asia's full report mentioned the base houses the Canadian Manoeuvre Training Centre and that those affected came from bases across the country.

### Right

- Right-rated reports led with Prime Minister Mark Carney's confirmation that four service members were killed and dozens injured in a fire at CFB Wainwright. They quoted Carney calling it one of the country's worst peacetime tragedies. The Department of National Defence's statement that there were no indications of terrorist activity was also included in some reports. ARY News and Times of India digests mentioned CBC's earlier reporting of seven deaths before Carney's confirmation.

**Provisional coverage gap:** right. The watch is not closed, so this is not yet a settled blindspot finding.
