# Iran Intensifies Plots Against US Officials, Intelligence Assesses

*US intelligence indicates Iran is significantly increasing efforts to target American diplomats and senior officials, with plots reaching advanced stages.*

**Scores for the source reporting** (0-100, assessing the original journalism this article was written from, not this write-up):

- Trust 60 of 100, higher is better. Central claim attributed to Axios and a US official; memo cited; multiple outlets corroborated.
- Craft 65 of 100, higher is better. Most outlets used digests, limiting depth. Some reports lacked specific dates or locations.
- Hype 45 of 100, lower is better. Headlines used strong language like 'assassinate' and 'advanced stages' without full report context.

**The short version**

- US intelligence assesses Iran has significantly increased efforts to target American diplomats and senior officials.
- Plots to assassinate these officials have reached 'advanced stages'.
- This intelligence is a factor in the State Department's decision to reduce its diplomatic presence in several Middle Eastern countries.
- The intelligence memo was delivered to U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

US intelligence assesses that Iran has significantly intensified its efforts to target American diplomats and senior officials in the Middle East and beyond. According to this assessment, plots to assassinate them have reached 'advanced stages'. This information is one of the reasons behind the State Department's decision to reduce its diplomatic presence in several Middle Eastern countries.

## Disagreement on memo recipients

Ultimo Cable - Noticias del Mundo states the intelligence memo was sent by U.S. Director of National Intelligence Jay Clayton and also had the director of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), John Ratcliffe, in copy. None of the other reports mention John Ratcliffe in relation to the memo.

## What the coverage left out

None of the left-rated digests mention the U.S. Director of National Intelligence Jay Clayton by name. The centre-rated digests do not mention the specific countries where the State Department is reducing its diplomatic presence. None of the right-rated digests mention the U.S. Director of National Intelligence Jay Clayton by name.

## Who covered it

Shares of the 83 covering outlets with a published leaning rating:

- Left: 21% (17)
- Centre: 32% (27)
- Right: 47% (39)

86 of 169 covering outlets carried no usable leaning rating and were excluded from those percentages. Coverage measured 2026-10-24T14:52:51.362Z.

**Coverage watch:** developing. Checked 4 times; 1 check found a material change. Most recently checked 2026-10-24T15:00:40.656Z.

## How the sides framed it

### Left

- All nine left‑rated outlets reported that U.S. intelligence judged Iran had markedly increased attempts to target American diplomats and senior officials, and that some assassination schemes had reached advanced stages. Ynet News published a full article, while the other eight outlets presented digests summarising the same assessment.
- Ynet News said the memo was given to Secretary of State Marco Rubio and tied the warning to a decision to cut embassy staff in Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Lebanon, Qatar and Jordan. The digests from Raw Story, The Hindu, Haaretz, in.gr, Siasat Daily, charter97.org, antena3.ro and UNN all cited a warning to Rubio, staff reductions and, in several cases, attacks by Yemen’s Houthis or Iranian operatives in the US and Europe.
- None of the left‑rated digests included a cost estimate for any response, nor did they quote Iranian officials or provide a timeline for the alleged plots. Only Ynet News identified Axios as the source of the memo and noted the State Department’s staffing decision; the other eight digests omitted the source attribution and any detail about possible US retaliation.

### Centre

- Centre-rated reports focused on the intelligence warning and the reduction of US diplomatic staff. Khaama Press's digest reported that US intelligence found Iran substantially increased efforts to target American diplomats and officials, with lethal plots reaching advanced stages, citing Axios. Hindustan Times' digest also mentioned that suspected Iranian plots involving potential loss of life had progressed to advanced stages, according to a memo obtained by Axios. The Statesman's digest noted US intelligence warns of advanced Iranian plots against American personnel as Washington reduces embassy staffing in four countries.

### Right

- Right-rated reports highlighted the advanced stage of Iranian plots and the reduction of embassy staff. La Tercera's digest stated the U.S. Director of National Intelligence sent a memorandum to Secretary of State Marco Rubio, indicating Tehran's 'lethal plans' against U.S. citizens had reached an advanced stage. Rediff.com's digest reported that a new US intelligence report found Iran had 'substantially increased' efforts to target American diplomats and officials, with plots reaching 'advanced stages'. Breitbart's digest stated U.S. intelligence warned that Iranian plots to kill Americans abroad have reached 'advanced stages', as Washington reduces diplomatic staffing across the Middle East.
