**The short version**

- North Korea's first vice department director Kim Jong-sik described the South Korea-U.S. joint exercise "Iron Mace" as a "hideous nuclear war rehearsal" aimed at using nuclear weapons against the DPRK.
- The "Iron Mace" tabletop exercise was conducted by South Korea and the U.S. at the Joint Chiefs of Staff headquarters in Seoul from September 29 to October 2.
- North Korea stated it will continue to accelerate the strengthening of its nuclear deterrence in response to these military drills.
- No centre-rated outlets reported on North Korea's condemnation of the "Iron Mace" exercise.

North Korea has denounced the recent joint military exercise "Iron Mace" conducted by South Korea and the United States. Kim Jong-sik, first vice department director of the Workers' Party of Korea's Central Committee, stated the exercise was a "hideous nuclear war rehearsal aimed at using nuclear weapons against the DPRK." The drills, which integrated South Korea's conventional military capabilities with U.S. nuclear capabilities, were held at the Joint Chiefs of Staff headquarters in Seoul from September 29 to October 2. In response to the exercise and other allied drills, North Korea has vowed to accelerate the strengthening of its nuclear deterrence.

## Disagreement on exercise details

The Korea Times reported that the "Iron Mace" exercise was a tabletop exercise integrating South Korea's conventional military capabilities with U.S. nuclear capabilities. Yonhap News Agency also described it as a tabletop exercise (TTX) for integrated nuclear and conventional warfare (CNI). Interfax.ru and Vz.ru also referred to it as a tabletop exercise. However, the digest from news-pravda.com described the exercises as "Iron Fist" rather than "Iron Mace."

## What the coverage left out

None of the left-rated reports mentioned the specific dates of the "Iron Mace" exercise, which were September 29 to October 2. No centre-rated outlet reported on this story at all.

## How the sides framed it

### Left

- The Korea Times, the sole left-rated outlet, led with North Korea's denunciation of the South Korea-U.S. joint military drills. It quoted Kim Jong-sik's statement that the "Iron Mace" exercise was "the most hideous nuclear war rehearsal aimed at using nuclear weapons against the DPRK." The report also noted that strengthening North Korea's nuclear capabilities is an "immutable" national defense policy. It mentioned the dates and location of the "Iron Mace" exercise and quoted Kim Jong-sik's warning that "strength is peace and peace is guaranteed only by strength."

### Centre

- Centre-rated outlets reported that North Korea condemned a recent US-South Korea military exercise. They stated Pyongyang described the drills as a rehearsal for nuclear war targeting the country. The outlets also reported North Korea vowed to accelerate efforts to strengthen its nuclear deterrent.
- The exercise, named Iron Mace, was aimed at integrating US nuclear capabilities with South Korean conventional forces. It took place from September 29 to October 2, according to Seoul's military. Some reports mentioned a senior official of the ruling Workers’ Party commenting on the drills.
- The digests did not include specific details about the scale of the drills or any direct quotes from US or South Korean officials. They focused on North Korea's reaction and its stated intention to bolster its nuclear capabilities.

### Right

- Right-rated outlets focused on North Korea's condemnation of the "Iron Mace" exercise and its commitment to nuclear deterrence. Multiple reports, including those from Interfax.ru, vz.ru, and politika.rs, highlighted Kim Jong-sik's description of the drills as a "rehearsal of a nuclear war" or "preparation for a nuclear war." Yonhap News Agency's digest noted that North Korea's justification of its nuclear development was unusual, with a military logistics official issuing the statement. News-pravda.com's digest stated, "We will accelerate the strengthening of our nuclear deterrence."

**Provisional coverage gap:** left. The watch is not closed, so this is not yet a settled blindspot finding.
