The US Department of Defense and Lockheed Martin have announced a 10-year framework agreement to produce a minimum of 850 F-35 fighter jets. The agreement, which covers production and maintenance, aims for an annual output of 156 aircraft. Lockheed Martin has committed to investing at least $7 billion in F-35 related projects under the deal. The framework requires approval and funding from the US Congress to proceed.

## Cost estimates vary

Some digests report that the first 425 jets will cost $61.4 billion. Another digest estimates the total deal at a minimum of $78 billion. The specific cost for the entire 850 aircraft has not been disclosed by the Pentagon or Lockheed Martin in the reports.

## What the coverage left out

None of the left-rated digests mention the specific cost estimate of $61.4 billion for the first 425 jets. None of the right-rated digests mention Lockheed Martin's commitment to invest at least $7 billion in F-35 related projects.

## How the sides framed it

### Left

- Left-rated reports highlighted the scale of the agreement, with headlines focusing on the 850 F-35 jets to be produced over 10 years. Several reports mentioned Lockheed Martin's commitment to invest at least $7 billion in F-35 related projects. Some noted that the deal requires congressional approval and funding. Cumhuriyet reported that the agreement covers production and maintenance, and that Lockheed Martin will invest at least $7 billion. The Korea Times stated the deal would "modernize and expand" the program and quoted a Pentagon official on stabilizing the defense industrial base. News.ro mentioned the deal is subject to congressional approval. Charter97.org and unn.ua also noted the agreement to produce 850 fighters, with unn.ua specifically mentioning the $7 billion investment. Telegrafi focused on "billions of dollars for air power" and the US targeting hundreds of new F-35s, referencing a commitment to prepare suppliers for wartime production.

### Centre

- Centre-rated reports focused on the finalisation of the deal and the production numbers. The Hill's headline stated the Pentagon "locks in" the 10-year deal. SF Weekly and charitonleader.com, both citing The Center Square, reported that the deal was announced without disclosing a price, but noted congressional analysts' estimates for the first 425 jets. Interesting Engineering highlighted the expansion of the F-35 fleet and the annual production rate of 156 jets. Military Times and Defense News both reported that the decade-long framework guarantees at least 850 F-35s, pending congressional approval and funding.

### Right

- Right-rated reports often highlighted the quantity of jets and the lack of disclosed cost. The Daily Caller's headline asked "at what cost?" while stating the cost remains unknown. The Daily Sabah reported the deal was "sealed" for 850 jets. Bizpac Review also used the "massive boost, but at what cost?" framing. The Washington Times described the contract as "controversial." The Daily Caller and Bizpac Review digests noted the cost remained unknown. The Daily Caller digest also mentioned congressional analysts' estimates for the first 425 jets. Fox Business's headline focused on Lockheed Martin unveiling the framework for 850 jets, noting it still needs congressional approval. Interfax.ru reported the agreement to manufacture 850 jets.

**Provisional coverage gap:** left. The watch is not closed, so this is not yet a settled blindspot finding.

## Questions

**What is the agreement between the Pentagon and Lockheed Martin?**

The Pentagon and Lockheed Martin have announced a 10-year framework agreement to produce at least 850 F-35 fighter jets. This deal aims for an annual production rate of 156 aircraft and includes provisions for spare parts and maintenance. Lockheed Martin will also invest a minimum of $7 billion in F-35 related projects.

**How much will the 850 F-35 jets cost?**

The total cost for the 850 F-35 jets has not been disclosed by the Pentagon or Lockheed Martin. Some reports cite congressional analysts estimating the first 425 jets at $61.4 billion, while another digest suggests the total deal could be at least $78 billion.

**What are the next steps for this agreement?**

The framework agreement requires approval and funding from the US Congress before it can proceed. This step is necessary for the full implementation of the production and investment plans.
