# Pentagon Fortifies Bases for 90 Days of Autonomy

*New initiative prepares military installations for potential disruption of civilian infrastructure.*

**Scores for the source reporting** (0-100, assessing the original journalism this article was written from, not this write-up):

- Trust 58 of 100, higher is better. The central claim is attributed to Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell and documents reviewed by Fox News Digital.
- Craft 57 of 100, higher is better. The reporting is based on digests, with only one full report, limiting the depth of analysis and direct attribution.
- Hype 65 of 100, lower is better. Headlines and digests use 'Doomsday Plan' and 'Apocalypse Scenario' framing, suggesting manufactured urgency.

**The short version**

- The Pentagon is preparing major US military installations to operate independently for at least 90 days without outside support.
- The initiative, named FORTRESS, aims to ensure American forces can continue operating if civilian infrastructure is disrupted.

The Pentagon is preparing major US military installations to operate independently for at least 90 days without outside support. This initiative, called FORTRESS, aims to ensure American forces can continue operating if civilian infrastructure is disrupted. Pentagon chief spokesperson Sean Parnell stated that reliance on standard civilian municipal infrastructure is an 'intolerable risk'.

The initiative includes preparing civilian factories for defense production, establishing alternative supply chains, and building strategic reserves of essential materials. FORTRESS envisions the use of portable nuclear reactors, large-scale battery storage, and microgrids to reduce dependence on civilian electricity grids.

## Disagreement on Trump's involvement

Live Mint reported that Sean Parnell told Fox News Digital that 'President Trump understands that world is gone, and he's already paved the way for new thinking: Golden Dome, a renewed focus on the Western Hemisphere, Greenland, Panama.' Ekstra Bladet and 20minutos also referred to the plan as 'Trump's Doomsday Plan' or 'Trump's Plan'.

## What the coverage left out

None of the reports printed below mention the cost estimate for the FORTRESS initiative. The full report from Live Mint did not include a specific cost estimate for the program.

## Who covered it

## How the sides framed it

### Left

- Six of the seven left-rated reports focused on the Pentagon's FORTRESS initiative and its goal of enabling military bases to operate independently for 90 days without outside support. Sources like scheerpost.com and antena3.ro framed the plan as a response to potential 'doomsday' scenarios or 'apocalyptic' situations, with scheerpost.com noting the establishment of nuclear reactors and reserves. Los Angeles Sentinel and lehighvalleylive.com also highlighted the 90-day self-sufficiency goal. Snopes provided a fact-check on the initiative, while SANA stated the initiative aims to prepare bases for a large-scale war that could damage the power grid.

### Centre

- Eight of the 18 centre-rated reports highlighted the Pentagon's FORTRESS initiative and its objective for military bases to operate independently for 90 days. Live Mint, which published a full report, detailed the initiative's components, including preparing civilian factories for defence production and establishing alternative supply chains. Interesting Engineering and Oil Price focused on the plan to survive 90 days cut off from critical supply and the potential use of nuclear reactors, respectively. WTKR and Digi 24 reported on the initiative as a program to prepare military installations for the future and a war of magnitude. 20minutos described it as Trump's plan for bases to have independent supplies of energy, water, fuel, and communication systems.

### Right

- Seven of the 21 right-rated reports focused on the Pentagon's plan for military bases to operate off-grid for 90 days. The Thinking Conservative and Conservative Review used headlines stating the Pentagon is preparing US military bases for an all-out war scenario. Next News Network framed the plan as 'Fortress America' directive that severs major bases from the civilian grid with portable nuclear reactors and 90 days of supplies, but stated the plan doesn't include families. The Dallas Express News and wbap.com discussed the Pentagon's resilience plan and global stockpiling advice. Upward News reported that the Pentagon preps bases for 90 days off the grid, calling it a national insurance policy against grid collapse.

**Provisional coverage gap:** left. The watch is not closed, so this is not yet a settled blindspot finding.

## Questions

**What is the Pentagon's FORTRESS initiative?**

The FORTRESS initiative is a Pentagon plan to prepare major US military installations to operate independently for at least 90 days without outside support. It aims to ensure American forces can continue operating if civilian infrastructure, such as power grids and supply chains, is disrupted during a major conflict.

**Why is the Pentagon implementing the FORTRESS initiative?**

Pentagon chief spokesperson Sean Parnell stated that reliance on standard civilian municipal infrastructure is an 'intolerable risk'. The initiative is a response to the possibility that a major conflict could disrupt infrastructure within the United States, rather than remaining confined to overseas battlefields.

**What measures are included in the FORTRESS plan?**

The FORTRESS plan includes preparing civilian factories for defense production, establishing alternative supply chains, and building strategic reserves of essential materials. It also envisions the use of portable nuclear reactors, large-scale battery storage, and microgrids to reduce dependence on civilian electricity grids.
