# Ship Fire Reported in Strait of Hormuz

*Iran's Revolutionary Guard claims three oil tankers hit mines; crew status unknown.*

**Scores for the source reporting** (0-100, assessing the original journalism this article was written from, not this write-up):

- Trust 48 of 100, higher is better. The central claim is attributed to Iran's Revolutionary Guard, with UKMTO also cited. No named on-record sources or documents were quoted.
- Craft 59 of 100, higher is better. The story is reported clearly, but lacks depth on the cause and consequences of the incident.
- Hype 41 of 100, lower is better. The headline and initial reports focus on a single ship, while later reports clarify it was three tankers, creating a mild discrepancy.

Scored by MediaBias News; method at https://mediabias.news/methodology.

**The short version**

- A ship was reported on fire in the Strait of Hormuz, nine nautical miles north of Khasab, Oman.
- Iran's Revolutionary Guard claimed three oil tankers caught fire after hitting mines in the Strait of Hormuz.
- The status of the crew on the burning vessel(s) is unknown.
- The cause of the fire and potential environmental impact are not yet clear, according to UKMTO.

A vessel was reported on fire in the Strait of Hormuz, located nine nautical miles north of Khasab, Oman. The British Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) issued a warning for other ships to proceed with caution. The status of the crew on the burning vessel is unknown, and the cause of the fire and any potential environmental impact have not yet been clarified, according to UKMTO.

## Disagreement on the number of vessels and cause

Iran's Revolutionary Guard claimed that three oil tankers caught fire after hitting mines in the Strait of Hormuz. The Guard also stated that the tankers were using an unauthorized route and had ignored warnings. Other reports, including from UKMTO, initially mentioned a single ship on fire without specifying the cause or attributing it to mines.

## What the coverage left out

None of the right-rated digests mention the claim by Iran's Revolutionary Guard that the tankers were using an unauthorized route and had ignored warnings. The full report from Novinky.cz, rated left, also does not mention this specific claim from the Revolutionary Guard.

## Who covered it

Shares of the 76 covering outlets with a published leaning rating:

- Left: 33% (25)
- Centre: 29% (22)
- Right: 38% (29)

85 of 161 covering outlets carried no usable leaning rating and were excluded from those percentages. Coverage measured 2026-10-29T21:59:07.031Z.

**Coverage watch:** developing. Checked 4 times; 1 check found a material change. Most recently checked 2026-10-29T22:00:24.448Z.

## How the sides framed it

### Left

- Eight left-rated outlets reported that three tankers caught fire in the Strait of Hormuz after striking mines. Iran's Revolutionary Guard Corps claimed responsibility for the incident, according to these reports. The vessels were reportedly attempting to transit an unauthorized route.
- The Saudi Gazette reported that the IRGC Navy stated the vessels had disabled their tracking systems. The Independent, The Toronto Star, The Hamilton Spectator, The Independent (US), The Record, and AJC all stated the tankers exploded while attempting to exit the Strait.
- Novinky.cz reported the fire was nine nautical miles north of Chasab, Oman, citing the UK Maritime Trade Operations Authority. This outlet also noted that the crew's status, damage extent, and environmental impact were unknown. In.gr reported the Guards seized a US drone in the area.

### Centre

- Centre-rated outlets reported that Iran's Revolutionary Guard claimed three oil tankers suffered explosions and fires after colliding with naval mines while crossing an unauthorized track in the Strait of Hormuz. Hola News and 15min.lt mentioned the Guard's claim of mines and the unauthorized route. Deutsche Welle reported a ship on fire as stated by a British maritime agency, and also noted Iran's claim of shooting down a US drone, linking it to ongoing military tensions with Washington.

### Right

- The right-rated reports predominantly highlighted the claim by Iran's Revolutionary Guard that three oil tankers hit mines and caught fire in the Strait of Hormuz. Outlets such as Aftenposten, Yonhap News Agency, and Free Malaysia Today News led with this assertion. Many of these reports also included the UKMTO's initial statement about a ship being seen ablaze, noting that the crew's status was unknown and that damage or environmental impact reports were not yet available. Some reports, like Kronen Zeitung, questioned whether the Iranian Revolutionary Guards were behind the incident, noting an increase in their attacks on merchant ships.
