*A 25-year-old Polish citizen opened fire in the Main Square, killing six and wounding 16.*

**Scores for the source reporting** (0-100, assessing the original journalism this article was written from, not this write-up):

- Trust 60 of 100, higher is better. Central claims are attributed to named officials, and the event is reported by multiple independent outlets.
- Craft 60 of 100, higher is better. Reporting is clear and holds together, with specific details provided on casualties and the suspect's attire.
- Hype 40 of 100, lower is better. Headlines and digests use measured language, with some outlets noting the 'terror' designation.

**The short version**

- Six people were killed and 16 wounded in a shooting in Krakow's Main Square.
- The gunman, a 25-year-old Polish citizen, held radical far-right views, according to Polish officials.
- Police shot and wounded the perpetrator, who was then taken to hospital.
- Poland's defense minister called the incident an 'act of terror'.

A shooting in Krakow's Main Square on Saturday afternoon resulted in six fatalities and 16 injuries. Polish authorities identified the perpetrator as a 25-year-old Polish citizen who held "very radical" and "ultra-nationalistic" views. The gunman was shot and wounded by police during a confrontation and subsequently taken to hospital. Poland's defense minister described the event as an "act of terror".

The attacker wore military-style fatigues and a bulletproof vest and used a military-type long gun. Police discovered additional weapons and ammunition in the suspect's car. The shooting occurred in the city's Main Square, a significant tourist area. Authorities stated the gunman acted alone and that the public is now safe. Krakow's mayor declared an official period of mourning.

## Disagreements in reporting

Reports differ on the number of people injured. CTV News and delo.si state 16 people were wounded, while Presse-fotos.dk, yourNEWS, and La Razón report 15 injured. The Daily Mirror and KahawaTungu also state at least 16 injured, but KahawaTungu also says "several others injured."

## What the coverage left out

None of the left-rated digests mention that two police officers were wounded, one seriously, as reported by CTV News. None of the right-rated digests mention that two horses were shot and injured, as reported by CTV News.

## Who covered it

## How the sides framed it

### Left

- Eight left-rated reports focused on the gunman's ideology and the circumstances of the attack. The Daily Mirror and The Age led with headlines stating the suspect was "inspired by far-right ideologies" or had "radical" views. delo.si's headline highlighted new footage showing who shot the attacker first. In.gr and Hot News also emphasised the perpetrator's far-right ideology. Yonhap News Agency and Telegrafi focused on the shooting itself and the dramatic scenes, with Telegrafi showing people fleeing gunfire. Dnevni list Danas identified the shooter as "Michal O., a young Pole and a right-wing extremist."

### Centre

- Seven centre-rated reports highlighted the shooting and the number of casualties, with many mentioning the gunman's far-right views. WA Today, The Age, and Sydney Morning Herald used identical headlines focusing on the gunman opening fire. Idaho Press and WA Today stated the gunman was "fascinated with far-right views." CTV News led with the gunman's "radical" far-right views. KYMA's headline was a straightforward "A shooting at a market in Poland leaves six dead."

### Right

- Six right-rated reports focused on the event and the perpetrator's background. yourNEWS and Toronto Sun used headlines stating "Gunman kills six in historic centre of Poland's Krakow." The Expressen headline noted "Police: Krakow Shooter Chose Victims Randomly • 'Radical Views'." Protothema reported the attack was a "Terrorist Act" and the perpetrator had "Far-Right Beliefs." La Razón identified the shooter as a "24-Year-Old Polish Citizen." Yonhap News Agency's headline was "Gunfire in Downtown Krakow, Poland… 6 Dead, 16 Injured (Roundup 3)."

**Provisional coverage gap:** right. The watch is not closed, so this is not yet a settled blindspot finding.
