**The short version**

- Donald Trump claimed on Truth Social that Israel and the entire Middle East would not exist if he had not prevented Iran from developing a nuclear weapon.
- US and Israeli forces conducted major strikes against Iranian nuclear and military facilities in 2025 and 2026.
- A Congressional Research Service assessment stated the impact of these strikes on Iran's nuclear weapon production capability remains unclear.
- Iran has consistently denied seeking nuclear weapons, with a 2026 US assessment cited by Congress indicating Iran halted its weapons programme in 2003.

Donald Trump posted on his Truth Social platform that Israel and the entire Middle East would not exist today if his administration had not stopped Iran from developing a nuclear weapon. He stated that his role in preventing Iran's nuclear ambitions was widely known but rarely acknowledged.

The United States and Israel carried out major strikes against Iranian nuclear and military facilities in 2025 and again in 2026, with preventing Iran from developing a nuclear weapon cited as a key objective. However, the current status of Iran's nuclear programme remains uncertain. A Congressional Research Service assessment published in October stated that the effect of the strikes on Iran's ability to produce nuclear weapons remains unclear.

## Disagreement on Iran's nuclear programme status

India Today reported that a Congressional Research Service assessment stated the extent to which the strikes affected Iran's ability to produce nuclear weapons remains unclear. This report also noted that previous assessments had concluded Iran was not building a nuclear weapon. In contrast, a 2026 US assessment cited by Congress, as reported by India Today, stated that Iran halted its nuclear weapons programme in 2003 and there is no established evidence that it had restarted a structured programme to build a nuclear weapon.

## What the coverage left out

None of the right-rated reports below mention the IAEA's belief, reported by Reuters and cited by India Today, that Iran may still have more than 200 kg of uranium enriched up to 60% stored at Isfahan.

## How the sides framed it

### Left

No separate framing summary.

### Centre

No separate framing summary.

### Right

- Right-rated reports led with Donald Trump's claim that his actions prevented Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon, thereby saving Israel and the Middle East. India Today, Arutz Sheva, Washington Times, news-pravda.com, and NDTV all highlighted this assertion. India Today, in its full report, quoted Trump stating, "Israel and, in fact, the entire Middle East, WOULD NOT EXIST TODAY if I did not stop Iran from having a Nuclear Weapon. Nobody wants to say that, but everybody knows it's true!" These reports also mentioned the US and Israeli strikes against Iranian facilities in 2025 and 2026, and the ongoing uncertainty surrounding Iran's nuclear programme.

**Provisional coverage gap:** left. The watch is not closed, so this is not yet a settled blindspot finding.
