# Trump says Houthis 'behaving very badly' amid Yemen conflict

*US President made comments to reporters before departing for Alaska, as fighting intensifies in Yemen.*

**Scores for the source reporting** (0-100, assessing the original journalism this article was written from, not this write-up):

- Trust 42 of 100, higher is better. Central claim attributed to Trump, but no other sources named or documents cited.
- Craft 45 of 100, higher is better. Reporting is thin, with limited detail and no quotes from affected parties or opposition.
- Hype 41 of 100, lower is better. Headline promises a warning, but the body offers only a brief quote and limited context.

**The short version**

- US President Donald Trump described the Houthis in Yemen as 'behaving very badly'.
- Trump made the remarks to reporters before departing for a campaign trip to Alaska.
- The Houthis control Yemen's capital, Sanaa, and several provinces, having held them since 2014.
- The current escalation of conflict in Yemen began in July after a 2022 truce expired.

US President Donald Trump stated that the Houthis in Yemen are 'behaving very badly'. He made these comments to reporters on Tuesday before departing for a campaign trip to Alaska. Trump did not directly answer a question about whether the US had decided to strike Houthi targets.

The Houthis have controlled Yemen's capital, Sanaa, and several provinces since 2014. A Saudi-led coalition intervened in Yemen in March 2015 to support the internationally recognised government. The current intensification of fighting in Yemen began in July, following the breakdown of a truce that had been in place since 2022.

## Disagreement on context

One report states that Trump's comments came as consequences of the US-Iran war spill into the broader Middle East, citing Houthi militants who control vast swathes of Yemen. Another report mentions the group has recently escalated attacks on commercial shipping in the Red Sea and the vital Bab al-Mandab Strait, and that the Houthis launched attacks on Riyadh's King Khalid International Airport, killing 13 people and wounding more than 300, closing the skies above the Saudi capital. A third report notes the Houthis are closely aligned with Iran and previously imposed a blockade of the Red Sea that forced commercial vessels to reroute around the Cape of Good Hope.

## What the coverage left out

None of the centre- or right-rated reports mention the 'Dawn of Yemen' operation launched by Yemeni government forces earlier this month to recapture Houthi-held areas.

## Who covered it

Shares of the 44 covering outlets with a published leaning rating:

- Left: 27% (12)
- Centre: 18% (8)
- Right: 55% (24)

69 of 113 covering outlets carried no usable leaning rating and were excluded from those percentages. Coverage measured 2026-10-13T22:48:02.650Z.

**Coverage watch:** developing. Checked 7 times; 1 check found a material change. Most recently checked 2026-10-13T23:00:39.065Z.

## How the sides framed it

### Left

- The left-leaning outlets led on Donald Trump's suggestion that he might ask Turkey's President Erdoğan to support Saudi Arabia against the Houthis. Trump's praise for Erdoğan was highlighted, with reports noting Trump said Erdoğan was a great friend and he respected him greatly.
- These reports carried Trump's statement that the Houthis were "behaving very badly." Several mentioned that Trump warned the Houthis had not learned their lesson from previous actions and that he would "never forget" their attacks.
- The digests noted that the Houthis control large parts of Yemen and have attacked Saudi Arabia, including airports. One digest mentioned that Saudi Arabia and Etihad had cancelled flights to several cities.

### Centre

- The centre-rated report led with Trump's statement that Yemen's Houthis were 'behaving very badly'. It noted that the militants control vast swathes of Yemen and that Trump's remarks came as consequences of the US-Iran war spilling into the broader Middle East.

### Right

- The right-rated reports focused on Trump's statement that the Houthis are 'behaving very badly' and his refusal to confirm whether the US would strike Houthi targets. One report mentioned the Houthis' recent escalation of attacks on commercial shipping in the Red Sea and the Bab al-Mandab Strait, and attacks on Riyadh's King Khalid International Airport that killed 13 people and wounded over 300, closing the Saudi capital's skies. Another report stated the Houthis are closely aligned with Iran and had previously imposed a Red Sea blockade forcing commercial vessels to reroute.

**Provisional coverage gap:** left. The watch is not closed, so this is not yet a settled blindspot finding.

## Questions

**What did Donald Trump say about the Houthis?**

US President Donald Trump told reporters that the Houthis in Yemen are 'behaving very badly'. He made these comments before departing for a campaign trip to Alaska and did not confirm if the US planned military action against them.

**Who are the Houthis and what is their current status in Yemen?**

The Houthis are militants who have controlled Yemen's capital, Sanaa, and several provinces since 2014. Their actions have led to an escalation of conflict in Yemen, which began in July after a 2022 truce broke down.

**What context was provided for Trump's comments?**

Some reports linked Trump's remarks to the ongoing US-Iran war and its consequences in the Middle East. Others highlighted recent Houthi escalations, including attacks on commercial shipping and the Riyadh airport, and their alignment with Iran.
