**The short version**

- British and French air forces conducted their first joint exercise simulating a nuclear strike, codenamed 'Rummy'.
- The exercise involved RAF Typhoon fighter jets alongside French Rafale aircraft over the Mediterranean Sea.
- The drill was conducted in compliance with security procedures and did not involve actual nuclear weapons.
- The event underscores cooperation between the two nuclear powers in response to growing threats in Europe.

The air forces of the United Kingdom and France have conducted their first joint exercise simulating a nuclear strike. The drill, codenamed 'Rummy', involved RAF Typhoon fighter jets flying alongside French Rafale aircraft over the Mediterranean Sea. Both countries' defence ministries confirmed the exercise, stating it was conducted in compliance with security procedures and did not involve any actual nuclear weapons.

The exercise aimed to enhance coordination between the two European nuclear powers. This event follows an agreement in July 2025 between Britain and France to reinforce cooperation over their nuclear arsenals, a move made in response to growing threats to Europe and uncertainty regarding their US ally.

## Disagreement on exercise timing

The Hindu reported the exercise took place on Friday, October 23, 2026. Channel News Asia and aerotime.aero stated that the exercise involved British Typhoons taking part on Tuesday evening. www.dnevnik.bg and Hot News also mentioned Tuesday as the day of the exercise.

## What the coverage left out

None of the left-rated digests mention the specific cost of maintaining France's nuclear arsenal, which was reported by Channel News Asia. None of the right-rated digests mention the specific cost of maintaining France's nuclear arsenal, which was reported by Channel News Asia.

The report also included a quote from British Defence Secretary Wes Streeting stating, 'In an increasingly dangerous world, our adversaries should be in no doubt: the United Kingdom and France stand together in their commitment to European security and to maintaining the deterrence that has helped preserve peace for generations.'
