# US confirms limited strikes on Iran's air defence systems

*Projectiles hit Qeshm Island near Strait of Hormuz; Iran claims drone downed.*

**Scores for the source reporting** (0-100, assessing the original journalism this article was written from, not this write-up):

- Trust 42 of 100, higher is better. Central Command described the situation as calm; Trump confirmed US strikes; multiple outlets cited Iranian media.
- Craft 57 of 100, higher is better. Most outlets are digests, limiting the depth of reporting. Few quote directly or offer context.
- Hype 41 of 100, lower is better. Headlines emphasize missile strikes and escalating tensions, but the body of reporting is largely based on initial Iranian media claims.

**The short version**

- Two projectiles struck Iran's Qeshm Island near the Strait of Hormuz, according to Iranian media.
- Iranian media reported that a US MQ-1 or MQ-9 drone was brought down over Qeshm Island.
- President Donald Trump confirmed that American forces carried out limited strikes on Iran's air defence systems.
- The US Central Command described the situation around Qeshm Island as relatively calm.

Two projectiles hit Iran's Qeshm Island, located near the strategic Strait of Hormuz, on November 7, according to Iranian media reports. Local residents reported hearing an aircraft before the projectiles struck the Suza area of the island. Explosions were also reported near Bandar Khamir.

Iranian state media also reported that a US MQ-1 or MQ-9 drone was brought down over Qeshm Island, with some reports attributing the interception to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) using a newly developed air defence system. The origin of the projectiles remained unclear.

President Donald Trump confirmed that American forces had conducted limited strikes on Iran's air defence systems. He told reporters that the US had "knocked out" an anti-aircraft device. The US Central Command (CENTCOM) described the situation around Qeshm Island as 'relatively calm' and stated it was aware of reports of explosions but declined further comment.

## Disagreement on drone type

Iranian media provided conflicting information regarding the type of US drone allegedly shot down. The official IRNA news agency reported that a US MQ-1 drone was brought down, while state broadcaster IRIB quoted the Iranian army as reporting the destruction of a US MQ-9 drone.

## What the coverage left out

None of the left-rated digests mentioned President Trump's confirmation of US strikes. None of the centre-rated digests mentioned President Trump's confirmation of US strikes or the Iranian claim of a drone being shot down. None of the right-rated digests mentioned the US Central Command's description of the situation as 'relatively calm'.

## How the sides framed it

### Left

- The left-rated reports led with the projectile impacts on Qeshm Island. The Siasat Daily, in its full report, stated that two projectiles struck the island early Saturday, according to Iranian media reports, as the country’s military reported intercepting American drones. It also noted that the US Central Command described the situation as 'relatively calm' and quoted President Trump confirming limited US strikes on Iran's air defence systems. IndexHR's digest also highlighted Iran's claim that its strategically important island was hit.

### Centre

- The centre-rated report from the Jerusalem Post led with local witnesses reporting two projectiles attacking the Suza area of Qeshm Island after the sound of an aircraft was heard over the island. The digest did not include confirmation of US strikes or drone downings.

### Right

- The right-rated reports focused on the projectile strikes on Qeshm Island and President Trump's confirmation of US military action. Gulf News's digest stated tensions escalated as the Qeshm Island strike sparked concerns. Times of India and The Straits Times digests reported that two missiles hit Qeshm Island, citing Tasnim news agency. Arab News's digest reported President Trump saying the US military carried out new limited strikes on Iran early Saturday, targeting its air defence systems, and that Iranian state media reported two explosions in the Suza area of Qeshm Island. News-pravda.com's digest mentioned explosions in the area of Qeshm Island and that the Iranian air defense system tried to intercept an American drone. Protothema's digest mentioned reports of explosions on Qeshm Island and activation of air defences. Geenstijl.nl's digest referred to a 'Small-Scale American Attack on Qeshm Island'. Yonhap News Agency's digest reported that two missiles landed on Geshm Island. EADaily's digest reported explosions on Kashm Island.

**Provisional coverage gap:** left. The watch is not closed, so this is not yet a settled blindspot finding.
