*Residents are rationing water and paying significantly more for supplies as access to wells and delivery trucks is restricted.*

**Scores for the source reporting** (0-100, assessing the original journalism this article was written from, not this write-up):

- Trust 42 of 100, higher is better. One outlet provided a full report; 34 provided digests, with claims attributed to humanitarian groups and the UN.
- Craft 59 of 100, higher is better. The full report quotes affected individuals and humanitarian groups, and explains the wider context of the conflict.
- Hype 41 of 100, lower is better. Headlines use strong language like 'crisis levels' and 'dwindle' but are largely supported by the reporting.

**The short version**

- Drinking water scarcity in Taiz, Yemen, has escalated to a crisis point in recent weeks due to a siege by Iran-backed Houthi rebels.
- Humanitarian groups state that the needs of Taiz's over one million residents are inadequately met, with limited access to wells and restricted water delivery.
- Families are rationing water and paying up to 75% more for bottled water, while some have resorted to buying water on credit.
- Amnesty International has urged the Houthis to open roads into the city, warning of a severe humanitarian disaster.

Drinking water has been scarce in Taiz, Yemen, for over a decade, but the situation has reached crisis levels in recent weeks. Iran-backed Houthi rebels are besieging the city, Yemen's third-largest, as their conflict with government forces escalates. Humanitarian groups report that the needs of Taiz's more than one million residents are barely being met.

Access to wells is limited, desalination plants are running low on fuel, and water delivery trucks are largely prevented from entering the city. Families are rationing water, with some paying as much as 75% more for bottled water than just a few weeks ago. Some residents have begun to buy water on credit.

Amnesty International has called on the Houthis to immediately open roads into the city, stating that Taiz is being pushed to the brink of a severe humanitarian disaster. The siege has also led to shortages of groceries and fuel, impacting food prices and the maintenance of basic services like hospitals and sanitation.

## Disagreements in reporting

The Washington Top News full report states that Houthi officials claimed rebel control of roughly 80% of the countryside surrounding Taiz and several key neighborhoods inside the city, though the Associated Press could not independently verify these claims. Yemen's foreign minister, Afrah al-Zouba, acknowledged the rebel group's tightening grip on the city.

## What the coverage left out

None of the left, centre, or right-rated digests mention the specific details of fuel shortages impacting desalination plants or the impact on grocery prices and other services as detailed in the full report from Washington Top News.
