# Albertans vote on separation in referendum

*Ten questions on the ballot include a vote on remaining in Canada or holding a second referendum on secession.*

**Scores for the source reporting** (0-100, assessing the original journalism this article was written from, not this write-up):

- Trust 30 of 100, higher is better. The central claim rests on anonymous sourcing, with no named sources or documents cited.
- Craft 50 of 100, higher is better. The reporting is largely based on digests, with only one full report, limiting depth and analysis.
- Hype 45 of 100, lower is better. Headlines promise results and analysis, but the body of the digests offers little beyond stating the vote has concluded.

**The short version**

- Albertans voted in a referendum with 10 questions on the ballot.
- One question asks whether Alberta should remain in Canada or hold a second, binding referendum on separation.
- Results for the separation question were expected between 1 a.m. and 4 a.m. MT Tuesday.
- Some polling stations experienced delays and stayed open late.

Albertans have voted in a referendum that included 10 questions for voters. The ballot addressed issues including immigration, constitutional authority, and the province's role within Canada's judicial system. The most prominent question asked whether Alberta should remain in Canada or pursue a second, binding referendum on separation.

Elections Alberta indicated that results for the separation question were anticipated between 1 a.m. and 4 a.m. Mountain Time on Tuesday. Some polling stations reported delays, leading to extended voting hours.

## Divergent projections on referendum outcome

CTV News projected that the majority of Albertans support remaining in Canada rather than pursuing a referendum on separation. The Straits Times reported that polls indicated less than a quarter of people in the western province wanted independence.

## Omissions in coverage

None of the right-rated digests mention the specific projection made by CTV News regarding the majority of Albertans supporting remaining in Canada. None of the left-rated digests mention the specific projection made by CTV News regarding the majority of Albertans supporting remaining in Canada.

## How the sides framed it

### Left

- Nine left-rated reports focused on the referendum, with most carrying the headline "The latest developments on the Alberta referendum." These reports stated that Albertans voted in a historic referendum with 10 questions on the ballot. The key question was identified as whether the province should remain in Canada or hold a second, binding referendum on leaving the country. Some also noted that the other nine questions focused on immigration and the Constitution.

### Centre

- Eleven centre-rated reports covered the referendum, with many using headlines such as "The latest developments on the Alberta referendum" or "Polls now closed in Alberta’s historic referendum vote." These reports highlighted that Albertans voted in a referendum with 10 questions, including the central question on remaining in Canada or holding another vote to separate. Some reports mentioned that polls were closed and Elections Alberta was preparing to report results. CTV News projected that the majority of Albertans support staying in Canada.

### Right

- Three right-rated reports focused on the referendum, with headlines including "Canada awaits result in Alberta independence vote" and "Alberta Awaits Referendum Results After Voting Delays, Separation Question in Focus." These reports noted that Canada was awaiting results from the referendum, with voting delays pushing back the expected announcement. The Straits Times reported that polls indicated less than a quarter of people in the western province wanted independence. Latestly mentioned that the separation question was in focus and that voting delays were occurring.

**Provisional coverage gap:** right. The watch is not closed, so this is not yet a settled blindspot finding.
