**The short version**

- FBI arrested 42-year-old contractor Ian A. Brinksman on Friday.
- Brinksman is accused of leaking classified national defense information to a romantic partner.
- Prosecutors allege Brinksman exploited his access to U.S. intelligence systems to examine classified reports unrelated to his duties.
- The romantic partner is described as a journalist who published material online, including on Substack.

The FBI arrested Ian A. Brinksman, 42, on Friday, accusing him of unlawfully transmitting national defense information. Prosecutors allege Brinksman, a Washington D.C.-based contractor with a Top Secret security clearance and access to sensitive intelligence, exploited his position to examine classified reports unrelated to his duties and provide them to a romantic partner. This partner, described as a journalist who published material online, including on Substack, subsequently released reporting based on the information.

According to the criminal complaint, Brinksman worked for a U.S. government agency and later as a contractor supporting it. Investigators allege he maintained a personal relationship with an individual who operated an online publication on Substack and had publicly stated she accepted leaks. The Justice Department stated that the alleged disclosures involved some of the nation’s most sensitive information. The FBI stated that protecting classified information remains a major counterintelligence priority.

## Disagreement on the identity of the journalist

The Hindustan Times reported that a DC Examiner journalist, Kaela Deese, claimed after the arrest that the individual could be journalist Aida Chavez, who has previously covered national security issues. However, the Hindustan Times noted that federal authorities had not confirmed these claims. Ynet News indicated that documents obtained by them suggest the journalist is Aída Chávez, founder of the publication Capital & Empire, who has previously worked for The Hill, contributed to The Washington Post, and served as a congressional correspondent for The Intercept and Washington correspondent for The Nation. Ynet News stated Chávez has not been charged with any offense.

## How the sides framed it

### Left

- The left-rated reports led with the arrest of the contractor and the accusation of leaking classified information to a romantic partner who published it online. Ynet News highlighted that three of the five stories published by the journalist partner concerned Israel, including one detailing alleged Israeli pressure on the Trump administration to assassinate a senior Iranian leader and another on U.S. intelligence assessments of Israel's efforts to preserve its strategic relationship with Washington. Raw Story quoted the allegation that the contractor handed over 'most closely held secrets'.

### Centre

- The centre-rated reports focused on the arrest of Ian Brinksman and the charges of leaking classified national defense information to his girlfriend, a Substack publisher. Hindustan Times provided details about Brinksman's background, including his work as a Manager with Deloitte and previous roles at a national security consultancy and as a reserve intelligence officer for the U.S. Navy. Reuters and UPI reported that the U.S. Justice Department announced the accusation on Friday. Newsweek noted that the affidavit links five classified reports accessed by the contractor to information later published on Substack.

### Right

- The right-rated reports led with the FBI arrest of the CIA contractor, Ian Brinksman, for allegedly leaking classified material to his romantic partner. Many reports, including those from The Daily Caller and The Gateway Pundit, highlighted the accusation that Brinksman handed over the nation's 'most closely held secrets'. The Gateway Pundit also described the partner as a 'left-leaning independent journalist'. Just the News stated Brinksman is a former contractor who provided services to the CIA.
