David Rivera was sentenced to 10 years in federal prison for his involvement in a secret $50 million lobbying campaign for Venezuela. - Rivera was convicted in May on charges including failing to register as a foreign agent and conspiracy to commit money laundering. - Prosecutors alleged Rivera sought to influence the Trump administration to ease sanctions on Venezuela. - Rivera's defense claimed his work was commercial and exempt from foreign agent registration, and that he aimed to oust Maduro. Former U.S. Representative David Rivera has been sentenced to 10 years in federal prison for his participation in a secret $50 million lobbying campaign on behalf of the Venezuelan government. Rivera, a former Florida congressman, was convicted in May on all counts, including failing to register as a foreign agent and conspiracy to commit money laundering. Political consultant Esther Nuhfer was also found guilty on all counts. Prosecutors stated that Rivera and Nuhfer worked secretly for the government of Nicolás Maduro from 2017 to 2018. They alleged Rivera sought to influence the Trump administration to soften its stance toward Venezuela and ease sanctions. Evidence presented included encrypted messages where code words were used to discuss activities and payments. Rivera's defense argued that his work was commercial in nature and therefore exempt from foreign agent registration requirements. Attorneys for Rivera also contended that his efforts were aimed at replacing Maduro with a leadership friendlier to the United States, not normalizing relations. ## Disagreement on Rivera's intent Prosecutors alleged Rivera and Nuhfer kept their arrangement secret to avoid damaging Rivera's political reputation as an anti-Communist, and that payments were a primary motivation. The defense maintained Rivera acted in good faith, believing his work was commercial and that he was trying to oust Maduro. ## What the coverage left out None of the left-rated digests mention the specific claims made by U.S. Attorney Jason A. Reding Quiñones that Rivera "sold his reputation to communists to fill his greed" or that "this was not some paperwork violation, or a simple mistake." The right-rated digests do not mention the specific claims made by federal officials that Rivera's actions were a betrayal of the South Florida community. ## Who covered it Shares of the 53 covering outlets with a published leaning rating: - Left: 45% (24) - Centre: 51% (27) - Right: 4% (2) 4 of 57 covering outlets carried no usable leaning rating and were excluded from those percentages. These digests stated he was convicted on all counts, including failing to register as a foreign agent and conspiracy to commit money laundering. Some noted his conviction followed a seven-week trial. ### Right - Two right-rated reports stated that former U.S. Rep.
