# Donald Trump announces extensive oil, gas and mineral exploration in Greenland

*Trump also said Greenland offers unmatched security value for the US and Europe and cited a September pact that allows two new US bases and a missile‑defence system on the island.*

**Scores for the source reporting** (0-100, assessing the original journalism this article was written from, not this write-up):

- Trust 62 of 100, higher is better. Multiple independent outlets report Trump’s Truth Social post announcing Greenland exploration, with named sources and a 13 billion‑barrel figure.
- Craft 70 of 100, higher is better. Explains strategic importance, separates Trump’s statements from context, and provides specific names and dates.
- Hype 15 of 100, lower is better. Headline is sensational but article content remains factual and measured.

**The short version**

- Trump announced on Truth Social that extensive oil, gas and mineral exploration will begin soon in Greenland.
- He claimed experts say Greenland’s readily available oil exceeds that of almost any other nation.
- A September security agreement allows the United States to establish two new bases and a missile‑defence system on the island.
- Former US special envoy Jeff Landry was appointed to work on making Greenland part of the United States.

On 14 October 2026 the US president used his Truth Social account to state that preparations were underway for a large‑scale search for oil, gas and minerals in Greenland. He added that experts assert the amount of easily accessible oil on the island is greater than in almost any other country. In the same post he argued that, from a security standpoint, Greenland is unparalleled for both US and European defence.

The announcement followed a security pact signed in September between the United States, Denmark and Greenlandic authorities. The agreement grants the United States permission to build two additional military bases and to install a missile‑defence system known as Golden Dome on Greenland. Earlier in the year former US special envoy Jeff Landry was named to lead efforts to integrate Greenland more closely with the United States.

> Det gjøres nå klart for en omfattende utforskning av olje, gass og mineraler i vårt nye og vakre Grønland!

**13 billion barrels** — Potential extractable oil cited by Finansavisen (Aftenposten referenced this estimate when discussing US interest in Greenland’s resources)

## How the sides framed it

### Left

No separate framing summary.

### Centre

- Ekstra Bladet led on the security dimension, noting that the September agreement permits the United States to establish two new military bases and the Golden Dome missile‑defence system in Greenland. The outlet reproduced Trump’s statements about the upcoming oil, gas and mineral exploration and quoted his claim that experts say Greenland’s readily available oil exceeds that of almost any other nation. It also recalled Trump’s repeated calls for US control of the island and his criticism of Denmark’s security policies.

### Right

- Aftenposten’s full report highlighted Trump’s announcement of the exploration programme, his oil‑resource claim, and his security argument that Greenland is unmatched for US and European defence. It also reported the appointment of Jeff Landry as a special envoy tasked with making Greenland part of the United States. The right‑rated digests (vz.ru, Iefimerida, Jyllands‑Posten, BT) echoed these points, each noting the Truth Social post, the oil claim, and the September security pact, though they did not always specify the two new bases or the Golden Dome system.

**Provisional coverage gap:** left. The watch is not closed, so this is not yet a settled blindspot finding.
