*Russian opposition figures received warnings from US and Lithuanian security services.*

**Scores for the source reporting** (0-100, assessing the original journalism this article was written from, not this write-up):

- Trust 42 of 100, higher is better. Central claim attributed to Garry Kasparov, with security services named; two independent outlets cited.
- Craft 57 of 100, higher is better. Reporting is clear and holds together; affected parties are quoted; fact is separate from comment.
- Hype 41 of 100, lower is better. Headline promises more than the body delivers, with mild emphasis and a lively but fair headline.

**The short version**

- Garry Kasparov and Ivan Tiutrin, co-founders of the Free Russia Forum, have been warned by Lithuanian and US security services that their lives are in danger.
- Kasparov described the news of being on an assassination list as a shock, but not a surprise.
- The US Department of Justice indicted five alleged Russian intelligence agents in mid-September for conspiring to order assassinations and fund attacks in the US and Europe.
- El Mundo reported that Russian agents had planned to assassinate Kasparov and former Russian parliamentarian Ilya Ponomarev.

Russian opposition figure Garry Kasparov and his associate Ivan Tiutrin have been warned by Lithuanian and US security services that their lives are in danger. Kasparov stated on social media that the news of being on an assassination list was a shock, though not a surprise. He added that he and Tiutrin had been informed of the danger and advised to take precautionary measures, which they have done.

The warnings come after the US Department of Justice announced in mid-September the indictment of five alleged Russian intelligence agents. These individuals are accused of conspiring to order assassinations and fund attacks in the US and Europe. The department indicated that the group had attempted to assassinate a prominent Russian dissident in the US during the summer.

## Disagreement on specific targets

The Spanish newspaper El Mundo reported that Russian agents had planned to assassinate Garry Kasparov and former Russian parliamentarian Ilya Ponomarev. However, Garry Kasparov stated that neither he nor Ivan Tiutrin had been informed that they were specifically targeted by the network being pursued by US justice.

## What the coverage left out

None of the left-rated, centre-rated, or right-rated reports mentioned the specific names of the five alleged Russian intelligence agents indicted by the US Department of Justice, nor did they detail the specific nature of the attacks they were accused of funding in Europe.

## How the sides framed it

### Left

- The two left-rated reports highlighted that Garry Kasparov and Ivan Tiutrin co-founded the Free Russia Forum in 2016. They noted that Russia listed this organisation as a 'terrorist' organisation in 2025. Both reports mentioned that Kasparov and Tiutrin were warned by Lithuanian and US security services that their lives were in danger.

### Centre

- Centre-rated reports focused on Garry Kasparov and Ivan Tiutrin being warned by Lithuanian and US security services about the danger to their lives. These reports included Kasparov's statement that the news was a shock but not a surprise. They also mentioned the US Department of Justice's indictment of five alleged Russian intelligence agents for conspiracy to commit assassinations and fund attacks in the US and Europe. Some centre-rated reports also cited El Mundo's claim that Russian agents had planned to assassinate Kasparov and Ilya Ponomarev.

### Right

- Right-rated reports led with Garry Kasparov's claim that he is on a Kremlin death list, stating he was informed of this by American and Lithuanian intelligence services. These reports mentioned that Kasparov and his associate Ivan Tiutrin were warned their lives were in danger. They also noted Kasparov's statement that he had taken precautionary measures.
