A World War II-era globe associated with Dwight D. Eisenhower was damaged on February 3 when staff attempted to move it to Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth's office. The 30-inch artifact sustained a gash measuring several inches and its spherical portion detached from its mounting. The incident occurred because trained curators from the U.S. Army Center of Military History were unavailable due to a government shutdown.

## Disagreement on the cause

The Washington Post reported that Hegseth's staff took it upon themselves to move the artifact unaided after professionals were unavailable. A source familiar with the matter told the Post that the damage was due to an "apparent lack of patience." The Independent reported that Hegseth's team declined to wait for help from military historians. n-tv stated the globe fell to the ground during transport by its own people because trained curators were missing for a certain reason.

None of the left-rated digests mention the specific date of the incident, February 3. None of the centre-rated digests mention the specific date of the incident, February 3. None of the right-rated digests mention the specific date of the incident, February 3.

## How the sides framed it

### Left

- Left-rated reports frequently highlighted the damage as a metaphor for the Trump administration or the current administration's actions. The Independent stated, "Hegseth demanded the world. His staff broke it during a rush to move it into his office." Raw Story reported the "Eisenhower globe blunder has Pentagon snickering" and that aides "skipped the Pentagon’s history experts and tried to move it into his office themselves." Alternet's headline read, "Pentagon team broke World War II globe in rush to nab it for Trump chief." Mediaite noted, "Hegseth’s Staff Reportedly Fumbles His Bid to Snag Eisenhower’s Globe."

### Centre

- Centre-rated reports focused on the factual account of the damage and the circumstances surrounding it. Political Wire reported, "Pete Hegseth’s Aides Broke Eisenhower’s Globe." iNews's headline asked, "Hegseth wanted to emulate one of the greatest US generals. Guess what happened next." Komo News, WKRC, and NewsChannel 8 all used the headline, "Hegseth’s staff dropped globe believed to be used by Eisenhower in Pentagon move."

### Right

- Right-rated reports generally stated the facts of the damage without extensive commentary on its metaphorical implications. n-tv reported, "Pentagon: Historical Globe Damaged by Eisenhower." abc 7 WJLA's headline was, "Hegseth’s staff dropped globe believed to be used by Eisenhower in Pentagon move." News-pravda.com stated, "Eisenhower's WWII globe damaged after Hegseth demanded it for his office."
