- A judge has issued a temporary order preventing the U.S. government from removing Belgal from the country.

A 28-year-old Dominican man, Oscar Belgal, was shot by a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent in New York City. Belgal was in a car with his five-year-old son at the time of the shooting. ICE officials stated that agents believed their lives were at risk during the encounter. Belgal's lawyers have stated that the bullet remains in his body.

The incident has led to significant public reaction, including protests in New York City demanding the abolition of ICE. New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani condemned the shooting and called for ICE to leave the city. Following the shooting, a judge issued an order temporarily barring the U.S. government from removing Belgal from the country.

## Conflicting accounts of the incident

ICE officials stated that agents shot Belgal because they believed their lives were at risk. Homeland Security stated the officers did not know there was a child in the car. One ICE official, Marcos Charles, said the shooting occurred after Belgal "refused" arrest and "weaponised his vehicle." Charles also stated Belgal was struck "superficially" in the neck. However, Belgal's lawyers later said the bullet was still in his body. NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch stated that police cameras showed Belgal backing into a parking spot when a plainclothes federal officer approached the driver's side window "with his gun drawn," but did not capture the shooting itself. Mayor Mamdani questioned whether Belgal knew the officers were ICE agents.

## How the sides framed it

### Left

- Reports from the left led with the shooting of Oscar Belgal and the subsequent protests. They highlighted Mayor Zohran Mamdani's condemnation of the incident and his calls for ICE to leave the city. These reports also noted the presence of Belgal's five-year-old son in the car during the shooting. The World Socialist Web Site mentioned that police under Mayor Mamdani's administration "assaulted protesters and protected the federal agents."

### Centre

- Centre-rated reports focused on the protests that erupted in New York City following the ICE shooting. They noted the clash between the city's Democratic mayor and the Trump administration over the incident. Internewscast's headline described the migrant as 'Criminal Illegal,' while the report itself focused on thousands of protesters demanding abolition.

### Right

- Right-rated reports frequently highlighted the defence of ICE agents by U.S. immigration officials and criticism of "sanctuary" policies. The New York Post described Oscar Belgal as a "migrant gangbanger trying to flee as ICE agents surround car." U-S-NEWS.COM's headline stated, "Sanctuary policies led to NYC ICE shooting, as calls for abolishing agency are not to blame." Twitchy criticised TMZ for its take on the shooting, questioning if Mayor Mamdani wrote it and referring to the suspect as a "criminal illegal alien."
