The central claim is attributed to a government report, and two independent outlets published full reports. - Craft 57 of 100, higher is better. The reporting includes details on the report's findings and ICE's response, with some outlets quoting specific examples. - Hype 41 of 100, lower is better. Headlines and digests use neutral language, but some mention contentious shootings, adding mild emphasis. A government report has recommended that federal immigration officials ensure body cameras worn by officers are uniformly activated when needed. The agency responsible, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), rejected this recommendation, stating that automatic activation, such as when an officer draws a weapon or activates a siren, could raise privacy concerns. The report by the Government Accountability Office (GAO) covers the period from February 2025 until September of this year and was conducted at the request of Democratic members of Congress. It examined policies for body-worn cameras at ICE and U.S. Customs and Border Protection. ## Disagreement on automatic activation The GAO report recommended that ICE take additional steps, such as automated camera activation, to improve transparency and public trust, particularly in situations involving unexpected use of force. However, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) disagreed, stating that cameras that automatically activate could record sensitive interactions with informants or victims. DHS indicated that body-worn cameras are required to be turned on at the beginning of pre-planned enforcement activities. ## What the coverage left out None of the left, centre, or right-rated digests mention the specific amount of $20 million that Congress provided for the ICE body-camera rollout plan, as reported in the full reports from Boston.com and Washington Top News. Additionally, none of the digests mention the specific examples of high-profile ICE-involved shootings that the full reports stated the GAO report did not go into, such as the shooting deaths of Renee Good or Lorenzo Salgado Araujo. ## Who covered it Shares of the 62 covering outlets with a published leaning rating: - Left: 60% (37) - Centre: 29% (18) - Right: 11% (7) 22 of 84 covering outlets carried no usable leaning rating and were excluded from those percentages. These reports highlighted that a nonpartisan government watchdog recommended improvements to oversight and guidance for federal immigration officers' use of body-worn cameras. The digests from these outlets stated that the GAO report was conducted at the request of Democratic members of Congress. Some left-rated reports noted that ICE rejected the suggestion, citing privacy concerns. ### Centre - Ten centre-rated reports focused on ICE's rejection of the recommendation for automatically activating body cameras. These reports stated that federal immigration officials need to ensure body cameras are uniformly activated when needed, following contentious shootings and arrests. The digests from these outlets noted that ICE rejected the suggestion due to privacy concerns. Several centre-rated reports mentioned that the GAO report covers the period from February 2025 until September of this year and was requested by Democratic members of Congress. ### Right - Five right-rated reports highlighted ICE's opposition to automatically activated body cameras. These reports stated that ICE is resisting a recommendation from the government's comptroller general to have its agents' and officers' body cameras automatically activate. The digests from these outlets mentioned that ICE cited the danger of inadvertent recording of sensitive information as outweighing the benefits. Some right-rated reports also noted that the federal watchdog found oversight gaps. **Provisional coverage gap:** right. The watch is not closed, so this is not yet a settled blindspot finding. ## Factuality profile of the covering outlets These are published factuality ratings of the outlets, not a verdict on whether this story or its claims are true. - mixed: 4 - high: 31 - unknown: 22 - veryHigh: 27 ## Verification scope This page compares coverage and scores the source reporting.
