Ilhan Omar's congressional staff asked Minnesota officials to change her listed birth year from 1981 to 1982 in May 2019, according to emails reviewed by the New York Post. - The Minnesota Legislative Reference Library's director confirmed that Omar's office requested the revision on May 17, 2019. - Omar's staff also worked to correct her birth year on Wikipedia and the Biographical Directory of the United States Congress. - A one-year difference in birth year can affect eligibility for derivative citizenship if the individual was not yet 18 at the time of a parent's naturalization. Emails reviewed by the New York Post show that staff for Rep. Ilhan Omar asked Minnesota officials to change her listed birth year from 1981 to 1982 in May 2019. The request came several months after Omar entered Congress and followed a political opponent's video questioning her age. The Minnesota Legislative Reference Library's director stated that Omar's office requested the revision on May 17, 2019. Omar's staff also worked with Wikipedia and the Biographical Directory of the United States Congress to correct her birth year on those sites. The one-year difference in birth year is significant because it can affect eligibility for derivative citizenship. Federal guidance indicates that laws in effect before February 27, 2001, assessed citizenship claims under specific age requirements. If born in 1981, Omar would have turned 18 in October 1999. If born in 1982, she would have remained 17 until October 2000. AJ Kern, a former political opponent, has questioned Omar's age at the time of her father's naturalization and her account of deriving citizenship, alleging that neither her father's naturalization nor her status as a minor at the time may have been true. ## Disagreement on the reason for the change The New York Post reported that the birth year change request followed a political opponent's video questioning Omar's age. The Gateway Pundit also noted this, stating the request came shortly after a political opponent's video went viral. However, BizToc reported that the change occurred days after fraud allegations emerged, and Zero Hedge stated the staff scrambled to change the year days after fraud allegations emerged. Real News Now reported that the change raised new questions about immigration history. ## What the coverage left out None of the right-rated reports below mention the confirmation from Homeland Security Investigations that the federal investigation concerns alleged immigration fraud and includes paperwork completed by Omar’s late father when she was a child. Nor do they mention Omar's statement accusing President Donald Trump of using federal law enforcement against her as an attempt to target political enemies. ## Who covered it Shares of the 15 covering outlets with a published leaning rating: - Left: 0% (0) - Centre: 7% (1) - Right: 93% (14) 3 of 18 covering outlets carried no usable leaning rating and were excluded from those percentages. Ilhan Omar's staff to change her birth year from 1981 to 1982. Breitbart and The Gateway Pundit highlighted that this change occurred after Omar was elected to Congress and followed questions from a political opponent about her age. These outlets also noted that the one-year difference is relevant to her eligibility for derivative citizenship. The Gateway Pundit stated that the change raises 'explosive questions about the validity of her U.S. citizenship'. RedState framed the event as a 'Cover-Up?' and suggested the change was made 'to fit citizenship story'. Next News Network used the headline 'EXPOSED' and stated her staff 'Scrubbed Birth Year From State Records'. News-pravda.com reported that the change fueled allegations of misrepresentation to obtain U.S. citizenship. TrendingPolitics reported Omar was 'Caught Red-Handed'. The Daily Wire stated the change matters because it is 'relevant to the current investigation into the congresswoman because of her account of when and how she obtained U.S. citizenship'. **Provisional coverage gap:** left. Ilhan Omar's congressional staff asked Minnesota officials to change her listed birth year from 1981 to 1982 in May 2019. The Minnesota Legislative Reference Library's director confirmed that Omar's office requested this revision on May 17, 2019. **Why is the change in birth year significant?** A one-year difference in birth year can affect eligibility for derivative citizenship. Federal law at the time required certain conditions to be met before a child's 18th birthday. If born in 1981, Omar would have been 18 in 1999, potentially making her ineligible for automatic derivative citizenship as a minor. **Did any left- or centre-rated outlets report on this story?** Based on the provided sources, no left- or centre-rated outlets reported on this specific story.
