The 49th annual Kennedy Center Honors will take place on December 7 at Capital One Arena in Washington, D.C., marking the first time the event will be held off-site. The main building of the John F. Kennedy Memorial Center for the Performing Arts has been closed to the public since September 15. The closure is for safety assessments and renovations following a partial ceiling collapse in the Grand Foyer last month. A construction consultant and the center's director have deemed the building unsafe for occupancy. President Donald Trump has stated that renovations will not proceed unless his name is added to the building. Trump wrote on Truth Social in September that the reconstruction and renovation of the Kennedy Center would not begin if a D.C. Circuit court ruling on the board's approved name was negative and not overturned by the U.S. Supreme Court. The White House declined to comment to NBC News about the change in venue. ## Disagreement on venue name Billboard reported that the awards will apparently continue to be called the Kennedy Center Honors, with President Donald Trump’s name not appearing. NBC News reported that President Donald Trump has stated that renovations will not proceed unless his name is added to the building, and that a federal judge has blocked multiple attempts to rename the center. ## What the coverage left out None of the left-rated reports below mention the date for the 49th annual Kennedy Center Honors. This marks the first time the event will not be held at the John F. Kennedy Memorial Center for the Performing Arts. The main building has been closed since September 15 for renovations. - NBC News and Billboard reported the venue change was due to ongoing safety assessments and renovations. NBC News stated the closure was prompted by a partial ceiling collapse in the Grand Foyer. Both outlets noted the legal dispute over adding President Donald Trump's name to the building. - Billboard also reported that the Kennedy Center is late in announcing honorees and a broadcast partner, noting CBS has broadcast the event every year since 1978. The outlet detailed past honorees and the Trumps' previous non-attendance at the ceremony. ### Centre No separate framing summary. ### Right No separate framing summary. **Provisional coverage gap:** right.
