**The short version**

- King Charles III will host the Sultan of Oman for a state visit on Tuesday, October 20, 2026.
- The visit is the first state visit by an Omani Sultan to the UK since 1982.
- The visit aims to strengthen bilateral cooperation and discuss regional developments, including the conflict in the Middle East and tensions in the Strait of Hormuz.
- Prince William and Catherine, the Princess of Wales, will be among the royal family members present for the welcome.

King Charles III is set to welcome the Sultan of Oman, Haitham bin Tarik Al Said, to the United Kingdom for a state visit on Tuesday, October 20, 2026. The visit will take place at Windsor Castle, where the Sultan will be greeted by members of the royal family, including Prince William and Catherine, the Princess of Wales. The event marks the first incoming state visit since the Duke and Duchess of Sussex returned to the UK, though they will not participate in official engagements. The Sultan's visit is intended to strengthen bilateral cooperation between Oman and the UK and to discuss regional developments.

The state visit occurs against the backdrop of the ongoing conflict in the Middle East and heightened tensions in the Strait of Hormuz. The Sultan is scheduled to hold talks with Prime Minister Andy Burnham in Downing Street on Wednesday. The last state visit by a Sultan of Oman to the UK was in 1982, when Queen Elizabeth II hosted the late Sultan Qaboos bin Said.

## Disagreement on visit duration

Reports differ on the length of the state visit. Punch Newspapers states the Sultan will hold talks with the Prime Minister on Wednesday, implying a visit of at least two days. Arab News, The Toronto Star, NiagaraFallsReview.ca, St Catharines Standard, The Hamilton Spectator, The Record, Winnipeg Free Press, and Owensboro Messenger-Inquirer all state it is a three-day visit. Gala.de reports a two-day visit, while The Arabian Stories News and Anadolu Ajansı report a four-day visit.

## What the coverage left out

None of the left-rated digests mention the reason for hosting the state banquet at Windsor Castle instead of Buckingham Palace, a detail noted in a centre-rated digest from Reality Tea. None of the right-rated digests mention Prime Minister Andy Burnham's attendance at a state banquet or his planned talks with the Sultan, details present in the full report from the left-rated Punch Newspapers.

## How the sides framed it

### Left

- Left-rated reports highlighted the presence of senior royals, including Prince William and Catherine, the Princess of Wales, at the welcome ceremony. Punch Newspapers, the only full report in this category, noted that the visit occurs against the backdrop of the ongoing conflict in the Middle East and tensions in the Strait of Hormuz. This report also mentioned that Prime Minister Andy Burnham would attend a state banquet and hold talks with the Sultan. The Independent (US) and The Toronto Star, NiagaraFallsReview.ca, St Catharines Standard, The Hamilton Spectator, and The Record all carried digests that mentioned the Sultan's visit and the context of regional tensions.

### Centre

- Centre-rated reports focused on the diplomatic and strategic aspects of the visit. Digests from Cecil Daily, Herald Bulletin, The Record, and Winnipeg Free Press stated that Britain seeks to bolster a strategically important ally "squeezed by both sides in the U.S. war against Iran." Evening Standard and Reality Tea digests mentioned the state banquet at Windsor Castle, with Reality Tea noting the reason for hosting at Windsor instead of Buckingham Palace was ongoing renovation work.

### Right

Arab News digests also highlighted Oman's "pivotal role in the Strait of Hormuz" and the strengthening of ties amid regional tensions.
