Central claim attributed to CNN, with Reuters and an unnamed US official also cited. - Craft 57 of 100, higher is better. Most outlets used digests, with only one full report. Some mention of Maduro's attorney's response is included. - Hype 41 of 100, lower is better. Headlines and digests use phrases like 'expected to face new charges' and 'could face new charges'. Scored by MediaBias News; method at https://mediabias.news/methodology. **The short version** - New York prosecutors are expected to bring new charges against former Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores. - The new charges relate to the alleged torture of Americans held in Venezuelan government custody. - Maduro and Flores were previously arrested and transferred to New York to face drug trafficking charges, to which they have pleaded not guilty. - CNN first reported the possibility of new charges, citing an unnamed U.S. official. Former Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, are expected to face new criminal charges in the United States. These charges are related to the alleged torture of Americans who were held in Venezuelan government custody. The announcement of these potential new indictments could come soon, according to reports. Maduro and Flores were arrested by U.S. military forces in Caracas on January 3 and subsequently transferred to New York. They are currently facing existing charges for drug trafficking and have pleaded not guilty to those accusations. The news of the potential new charges was first reported by CNN, citing an unnamed U.S. official. ## Disagreement on additional charges While multiple outlets report that new charges are expected, one report indicates that an attorney for Maduro stated they had not been given notice of additional charges. This attorney's comment was reported by CBS News. ## What the coverage left out None of the left-rated reports printed below mention the specific number of Americans allegedly tortured or provide details about the circumstances of their detention beyond being held in Venezuelan government custody. Similarly, none of the centre-rated reports specify the number of Americans allegedly tortured or offer details about the circumstances of their detention. None of the right-rated reports specify the number of Americans allegedly tortured or provide details about the circumstances of their detention. ## Who covered it Shares of the 60 covering outlets with a published leaning rating: - Left: 13% (8) - Centre: 34% (20) - Right: 53% (32) 44 of 104 covering outlets carried no usable leaning rating and were excluded from those percentages. These reports consistently cited CNN as the source for the initial reporting on the potential new charges. They noted that Maduro and Flores were previously arrested by U.S. forces in Caracas on January 3 and transferred to New York to face drug trafficking charges, to which they have pleaded not guilty. Several left-rated outlets, including CNN itself, mentioned that the charges would be related to the alleged torture of Americans held in Venezuelan government custody. Some reports also noted that the announcement of the charges could be made soon. For example, CNN stated that prosecutors in New York are expected to bring new charges against the former Venezuelan President and his wife over the alleged torture of Americans who were held in Venezuelan government custody in recent years, according to multiple people familiar with the investigation. ### Centre - Centre-rated reports focused on the expected new U.S. charges against Nicolás Maduro and Cilia Flores for alleged torture of Americans. These reports frequently mentioned that the former Venezuelan president and his wife were arrested by U.S. military forces on January 3 and brought to New York to face drug trafficking charges, to which they have pleaded not guilty. Many centre-rated outlets attributed the initial reporting of the potential new charges to CNN. Some reports included details such as the charges being related to the alleged torture of Americans held in Venezuelan prisons. For instance, CBS News reported that an attorney for Maduro told them he had not been given notice that additional charges could be coming. The Globe & Mail reported that the U.S. would charge Venezuela’s Maduro over alleged torture of Americans, citing an official. ### Right - Right-rated reports highlighted that Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, are expected to face new charges in the U.S. concerning the alleged torture of Americans. These reports often mentioned that the charges would be in addition to existing ones for drug trafficking. Several right-rated outlets cited CNN as the source of the information regarding the potential new charges. Some reports specified that New York prosecutors are preparing a new indictment against the couple for the detention of U.S. citizens in Venezuelan jails. For example, Anadolu Ajansı stated that U.S. investigators have discussed charging several additional people for their alleged roles in the torture of Americans, as reported by CNN. El Debate reported that New York prosecutors are preparing a new indictment against the couple for the detention of U.S. citizens in Venezuelan jails. **Provisional coverage gap:** left.
