**Scores for the source reporting** (0-100, assessing the original journalism this article was written from, not this write-up):

- Trust 42 of 100, higher is better. Two full reports and 38 digests provide corroboration, but only one named source is quoted.
- Craft 59 of 100, higher is better. Reporting is clear and holds together, but lacks quotes from affected parties and discussion of future events.
- Hype 41 of 100, lower is better. Headlines and digests indicate pressure on a candidate, but the substance is moderate.

**The short version**

- Michigan Senate candidate Mike Rogers was questioned about U.S. President Donald Trump's trade war with Canada during a debate.
- Rogers stated he had spoken with the Secretary of Commerce regarding resolving the trade deal.
- The trade war has become a campaign issue in the race between Rogers and Democratic nominee Abdul El-Sayed.

During a debate for the Michigan Senate seat, Republican candidate Mike Rogers faced questions regarding U.S. President Donald Trump's trade policies with Canada. The trade dispute has emerged as a significant issue in the campaign between Rogers and his Democratic opponent, Abdul El-Sayed. Polling suggests that a majority of Michigan voters disapprove of the tariffs imposed on Canada.

## Disagreement on details of trade actions

Sources differ on the specifics of Trump's trade actions. CBC News and CTV News reported that Trump signed an order to rename Lake Ontario as Lake America and imposed 50 per cent tariffs on Canadian goods. They also stated that Ottawa responded with retaliatory duties and a U.S. import ban on some Canadian goods took effect. However, the specific details of these actions, such as the percentage of tariffs and the exact goods affected, are not consistently reported across all sources.

## What the coverage left out

None of the right-rated reports mention the specific polling data indicating that a majority of Michigan voters disapprove of Trump's tariffs on Canada, a detail present in left and centre-rated reports. The right-rated reports also did not detail Rogers' specific statements about speaking with the Secretary of Commerce to resolve the trade deal.

## How the sides framed it

### Left

- Nine left-rated reports focused on Mike Rogers facing pressure over Trump's trade war with Canada during a debate. These reports highlighted Rogers' statements about wanting the trade deal resolved and his call to the Secretary of Commerce. They also noted that the trade war has become a campaign issue in the race between Rogers and El-Sayed, with polling showing Michigan voters disapprove of Trump's tariffs. The reports mentioned Trump's actions, including renaming Lake Ontario and imposing 50 per cent tariffs on Canadian goods, and Ottawa's retaliatory duties.

### Centre

- Nine centre-rated reports also centred on Mike Rogers facing pressure during a debate concerning Trump's trade war with Canada. These digests noted Rogers' comments about speaking with the Secretary of Commerce to resolve the trade deal and his desire to end the tariffs. The coverage indicated the trade dispute is a campaign issue for the Senate race and that Michigan voters disapprove of the tariffs. Trump's actions, such as the 50 per cent tariffs and retaliatory duties, were also mentioned.

### Right

- Five right-rated reports highlighted that Mike Rogers was changing his tune on Trump's tariffs as the election approached. These reports noted Rogers and El-Sayed were set for their first debate after online sparring. The NRSC statement focused on El-Sayed's political positions rather than the trade war specifics.

**Provisional coverage gap:** right. The watch is not closed, so this is not yet a settled blindspot finding.
