Prime Minister Mark Carney announced that the federal government will consider the advice of an arm's-length panel on firearms classification before making any decisions regarding the SKS rifle. This statement comes after an FBI criminal complaint filed in Seattle detailed the Tumbler Ridge mass shooter's discussions about using an SKS rifle and a potential conversion device. The Tumbler Ridge mass shooting, which occurred in February, resulted in the deaths of eight people, including six children. The perpetrator died by suicide. The FBI's 41-page complaint alleges that an individual named James Bryant, aged 30, advised the shooter, Jesse Van Rootselaar, in planning the attack. The complaint includes text exchanges and photos related to the weapon. Heidi Rathjen, co-founder of the gun control advocacy group PolySeSouvient, stated that the FBI's findings add to the reasons for banning the SKS rifle in Canada. According to data gathered by PolySeSouvient, since 2014, eight police officers and 15 civilians have been killed in Canada by perpetrators using SKS rifles. Rathjen, a survivor of the 1989 École Polytechnique massacre, has advocated for restrictions on the SKS, calling it a weapon unsuitable for ordinary civilians. ## Disagreement on weapon type While the FBI complaint details discussions about an SKS rifle and a possible conversion device, Canadian authorities have not officially disclosed the types of firearms used in the Tumbler Ridge killings. CTV News reported that RCMP Staff Sgt. Kris Clark stated that privacy rights differ between Canada and the U.S. and that disclosure of additional information is under consideration by the courts. A judge is yet to rule on media organisations' arguments for lifting a publication ban on certain details. ## Omissions in coverage No right-rated outlet ran this story. The digests from left and centre-rated outlets did not mention the specific details of the FBI's 41-page criminal complaint, such as the allegation that James Bryant was charged with conspiracy to murder persons in a foreign country, or that Van Rootselaar allegedly stole guns and ammunition from her family’s gun safe six months prior to the mass shooting. The digests also did not include Heidi Rathjen's quote about the SKS being a weapon unsuitable for ordinary civilians. ## Who covered it Shares of the 25 covering outlets with a published leaning rating: - Left: 64% (16) - Centre: 36% (9) - Right: 0% (0) 2 of 27 covering outlets carried no usable leaning rating and were excluded from those percentages.
