# Police called to youth soccer game over 3-year-old player

*League director claims parents were disruptive; mother says son was removed for being too skilled.*

**Scores for the source reporting** (0-100, assessing the original journalism this article was written from, not this write-up):

- Trust 42 of 100, higher is better. The central claim is attributed to a named body (police/league) and the full report includes named individuals.
- Craft 57 of 100, higher is better. The full report quotes affected parties and names specific details, but lacks comment on why the story matters.
- Hype 68 of 100, lower is better. Headlines promise outrage and controversy, with some suggesting police intervention was solely due to the child's talent.

**The short version**

- Police were called to a youth soccer game in Winter Park, Florida, involving a 3-year-old named Nevada.
- The league director stated the call was made because Nevada's parents were disruptive, not solely due to the child's talent.
- Nevada's mother claims the police were called because her son was too good at soccer.
- The league, i9 Sports, stated they are investigating the circumstances.

Police were called to a youth soccer game in Winter Park, Florida, involving a 3-year-old named Nevada. The incident gained attention after a video of the police presence went viral. The league director stated the call was made because Nevada's parents were disruptive, not solely due to the child's talent.

Nevada's mother claims the police were called because her son was too good at soccer. She stated that the coach told Nevada he could stay in the game if he passed the ball, but police became involved. The league, i9 Sports, has stated they are investigating the circumstances and that the respectful treatment and well-being of every child and family are important to them.

## Disagreement on reason for police call

The league director, Thomas Hayes, told police that the child was very good and advanced for his age, but that the call was made due to Nevada's parents creating a disturbance. He stated that Nevada's parents took issue with him telling referees not to let their son push other players, and that they created "a big scene, arguing with other parents." Nevada's mother told police that they always stood on the opposite side of the field from other parents to avoid disruption and that they were "literally kicking him out of this place because he's good at soccer."

## What the coverage left out

None of the left-rated digests mentioned the league director's statement that the call was made because Nevada's parents were disruptive. None of the right-rated digests mentioned the league's statement that they are investigating the circumstances.

## How the sides framed it

### Left

- Four left-rated reports focused on the claim that police were called because the child was "too good" at soccer. The Independent stated the police were called "because the boy was ‘too good at soccer’". ABC 7 News reported that police were called on a "3-year-old soccer prodigy" for being "'too good'", and thegrio noted 911 audio was released in an incident that "barred 3-year-old Black child from league". WCSH also reported police addressed rumours of a dispute involving the 3-year-old.

### Centre

- Eleven centre-rated reports highlighted that police addressed social media rumours about the incident. CBS News, which published a full report, stated that "some claim the cops showed up because a 3-year-old child was too good, while the league's director says the call was made because the parents were being disruptive." Hindustan Times reported that police clarified they "weren't called because of kid's talent" and that a GoFundMe campaign had been started for Nevada Pierre. Other centre-rated outlets, including 9NEWS Denver, WFAA 8abc, WKYC, WLTX, WBIR, KTVB, Krem2 News, KYTX, Fort Smith/Fayetteville News, and 5newsonline, reported that police addressed viral rumours of a dispute involving the 3-year-old during a youth soccer game.

### Right

- Two right-rated reports focused on police clarification of the incident. WFMD.com noted that police were discussing why they responded to a children's soccer game. Times of India reported that police were called to the scene after parents claimed the boy was dropped for outplaying other children and being "too good".
