Multiple named officials and AP data provide corroborated facts across three outlets, raising trust to 86. - Craft 95 of 100, higher is better. Quotes, specific figures, and clear context give the story a high craft score of 95. - Hype 30 of 100, lower is better. Headline is sensational but body remains factual, resulting in mild hype (30). Ron DeSantis described the GOP’s midterm defeat as an extinction‑level event. - Vice President JD Vance said the war in Iran was the reason Republicans lost the elections. - Mississippi Senate race remained too close to call, with 96% of votes counted and Democrat Scott Colom ahead by 43 votes. On Election Day, voters handed Democrats a dominant victory, giving the party control of both the House of Representatives and the Senate with a margin of at least 54 seats, according to the reports. The outcome ended a decade of divided government and gave Democrats a commanding majority in both chambers. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis responded by calling the Republican Party’s midterm losses an “extinction‑level event,” likening the defeat to a catastrophic natural disaster. Vice President JD Vance posted on X that the war in Iran was the primary cause of the GOP’s wipeout, echoing concerns about foreign policy fallout. Georgia Governor Brian Kemp said he would not convene a special session to redraw the state’s political boundaries, refusing to limit the power of incoming Democratic Governor‑elect Keisha Lance Bottoms. Meanwhile, the Associated Press reported that 96% of votes were counted in the Mississippi Senate race, with Democrat Scott Colom leading incumbent Republican Cindy Hyde‑Smith by 43 votes. Senate Majority Leader‑designate Chuck Schumer told reporters that his leadership was “not about me” but about the American people, expressing confidence that he would retain the position despite some newly elected Democrats indicating they might not support him. ## Disagreement on DeSantis' metaphor Bloomberg’s digest reported that DeSantis compared the GOP’s defeat to a “meteor strike,” while Politico’s digest said he called it an “extinction‑level event.” Both digests convey a severe setback but use different imagery. > "This is not about me," Schumer said, "the issue is the American people and what they want." > > — Chuck Schumer, Senate Majority Leader‑designate **96%** — Mississippi votes counted (As of 11:30 a.m. ET, the Associated Press reported 96% of ballots tallied, with Democrat Scott Colom ahead by 43 votes.) ## What the right omitted None of the right‑rated digests mention any of the facts reported by the left or centre outlets, such as DeSantis’s metaphor, the Democratic congressional majorities, Vance’s Iran‑war explanation, or the Mississippi vote count. ## Who covered it Shares of the 103 covering outlets with a published leaning rating: - Left: 19% (20) - Centre: 23% (23) - Right: 58% (60) 38 of 141 covering outlets carried no usable leaning rating and were excluded from those percentages. Most recently checked 2026-11-05T22:15:23.612Z. ## How the sides framed it ### Left - The HuffPost full report highlighted the scale of the Democratic victory, Schumer’s confidence in retaining Senate leadership, Vance’s attribution of the loss to the Iran war, and Kemp’s refusal to redraw Georgia’s maps. It also covered Scott Colom’s narrow lead in Mississippi, Kamala Harris’s statement on corruption, and Marjorie Taylor Greene’s criticism of Trump. - Politico’s digest focused on DeSantis’s description of the midterm outcome as an “extinction‑level event” and noted that Democrats flipped long‑held Republican seats across the country. ### Centre - Bloomberg’s digest centred on DeSantis’s warning that the GOP’s midterm wipeout resembled a “meteor strike,” stressing the governor’s view that the loss represents a historic and potentially irreversible setback for the party. ### Right - Right-rated outlets reported that Florida Governor Ron DeSantis described the Republican midterm election losses as an "extinction-level event" for the party. Several digests stated that DeSantis warned the setback could last for a decade or more, with some predicting a struggle to regain control of Congress until 2032. - Digests from these outlets mentioned DeSantis blaming "some GOP leaders" and congressional Republicans for votes against releasing the Epstein files and for stock trading. One digest noted DeSantis pointed to Florida's governing record and a property tax amendment as reasons for weathering the national cycle. - The digests did not include specific figures on the number of seats lost or gained by either party. No digests quoted DeSantis directly or attributed specific policy failures to him. **Provisional coverage gap:** left.
