# Senate report: Banks knew of Epstein transactions for years before reporting

*Democrats allege JPMorgan Chase, Bank of America and Deutsche Bank ignored suspicious activity until 2019*

**Scores for the source reporting** (0-100, assessing the original journalism this article was written from, not this write-up):

- Trust 52 of 100, higher is better. Trust is bolstered by the use of a named official and specific bank names, but limited by reliance on a single partisan report.
- Craft 54 of 100, higher is better. Reporting includes responses from the accused banks, providing a degree of balance to the Senator's allegations.
- Hype 25 of 100, lower is better. Headlines vary from measured summaries to sensationalist claims about 'ruse' or 'protecting' Epstein.

**The short version**

- A Senate report alleges JPMorgan Chase, Bank of America and Deutsche Bank knew of suspicious Epstein transactions from 2002 but did not report them until 2019.
- The report, released by Sen. Ron Wyden, says bankers failed to file suspicious activity reports to the Treasury Department as required by law.
- Deutsche Bank and Bank of America responded to the report; JPMorgan Chase did not comment.
- Democrats are calling for a Justice Department investigation into the banks’ reporting delays.

A report from the Senate Finance Committee, released by Sen. Ron Wyden on 4 August 2026, alleges that more than a dozen bankers at JPMorgan Chase, Bank of America and Deutsche Bank were aware of suspicious transactions by Jeffrey Epstein as early as 2002. The report says the banks did not file suspicious activity reports to the Treasury Department until after Epstein’s arrest in 2019 on sex-trafficking charges.

The report is based on Treasury documents, internal bank records and legal filings. It says Epstein moved more than a billion dollars through thousands of transactions over nearly two decades. Under the Bank Secrecy Act, banks are required to report suspicious transactions to federal authorities.

Deutsche Bank issued a statement regretting its historical connection to Epstein. Bank of America denied facilitating wrongdoing. JPMorgan Chase, which dropped Epstein as a client in 2013, did not respond to requests for comment. The report says JPMorgan Chase did not report suspicious transactions until six years after ending the relationship, shortly after Epstein’s arrest.

## What the coverage left out

No centre- or right-rated outlet ran this story at all. None of the reports below mention the specific number of transactions or the exact timeline of when each bank first became aware of the suspicious activity, beyond the 2002 start date cited in the Senate report.

## How the sides framed it

### Left

- The two left-rated reports led on the Senate Democrats’ allegation that banks failed to report suspicious Epstein transactions for years. NPR’s full report quoted the committee’s statement that the banks’ inaction allowed Epstein to continue moving money to victims, associates and collaborators. It also carried the banks’ responses: Deutsche Bank’s regret, Bank of America’s denial and JPMorgan Chase’s silence.
- NPR’s report included the committee’s call for a Justice Department investigation into why the reports were not filed sooner. It also quoted the report’s language: “The bankers who needed to be asking questions didn’t ask them. Jeffrey Epstein’s crimes were hiding in plain sight.” The Georgia Public Broadcasting digest, which carried no direct quotes, summarised the report’s core allegation that banks failed to act until after Epstein’s arrest.

### Centre

- The centre-rated reports agree that a Senate Finance Committee report, led by Democrats, found major banks knew of suspicious transactions linked to Jeffrey Epstein for years before reporting them. Both note the banks involved were JPMorganChase, Bank of America, and Deutsche Bank. The findings cover transactions dating back to 2002, totalling over a billion dollars.
- KPBS led on the banks’ failure to file timely suspicious activity reports under the Bank Secrecy Act. It quoted the report’s claim that banks allowed Epstein to move funds to victims and associates. The Oregonian’s digest highlighted Senator Ron Wyden’s statement that Epstein’s crimes were “hiding in plain sight.”
- KPBS included responses from Deutsche Bank and Bank of America. Deutsche Bank said it regretted its connection to Epstein and had strengthened controls. Bank of America denied wrongdoing. Neither the digest nor the full report mentioned JPMorganChase’s response, though KPBS noted the bank had not commented.

### Right

- The right-rated digests agree that a Senate report accused JPMorgan Chase, Deutsche Bank and Bank of America of failing to report suspicious transactions linked to Jeffrey Epstein for years. They also agree the report alleges Epstein moved about $1 billion through these banks.
- Six of the nine digests led on the banks’ alleged role in enabling Epstein’s financial activities. Four named Senator Ron Wyden as the report’s author. Three specified that the report followed a four-year investigation. None of the digests mentioned the names of Epstein’s victims or quoted them directly.
- Five digests described Epstein as a “notorious pedophile.” Three used the phrase “turned blind eye” in their headlines. None of the digests included a response from the banks named in the report.

**Settled coverage blindspot:** right. This finding was made after the coverage watch closed.

## Questions

**What did the Senate report say about the banks?**

The Senate Finance Committee report, released by Sen. Ron Wyden, alleges that JPMorgan Chase, Bank of America and Deutsche Bank knew of suspicious transactions by Jeffrey Epstein as early as 2002 but failed to report them to the Treasury Department until after his 2019 arrest. The report says this allowed Epstein to continue moving money for years.

**How did the banks respond to the report?**

Deutsche Bank issued a statement regretting its historical connection to Epstein. Bank of America denied facilitating wrongdoing. JPMorgan Chase did not respond to requests for comment, though the report notes it dropped Epstein as a client in 2013 but did not report suspicious transactions until 2019.

**What happens next after the report?**

Senate Democrats are calling for the Justice Department to investigate why the banks did not file suspicious activity reports sooner. They also want tighter reporting requirements for banks in the future to prevent similar cases.
