**The short version**

- Tens of thousands of people gathered in Taipei for Taiwan's annual Pride parade.
- Organizers estimated around 150,000 people participated in this year's event.
- Taiwan was the first country in Asia to legalize same-sex marriage in 2019.
- A police raid on a gay bar in Taipei earlier this month preceded the parade.

Tens of thousands of people marched in Taipei for Taiwan's annual Pride parade, an event described as one of Asia's largest celebrations of inclusivity. Organizers estimated that approximately 150,000 people participated in the parade on Saturday. Taiwan became the first in Asia to legalize same-sex marriage in 2019, following years of advocacy.

The parade took place shortly after a police raid on a gay bar in Taipei earlier this month, during which 51 patrons were detained over suspected breaches of public decency rules. The incident led to protests and apologies from the city's mayor, Chiang Wan-an, with some police officers disciplined.

## Disagreement on parade numbers

Organizers estimated around 150,000 people joined this year's Pride parade, according to My Mother Lode. Focus Taiwan reported that an estimated 3,800 people marched in Taipei in support of the transgender community on Friday night, according to the Taiwan Tongzhi (LGBTQ+) Hotline Association.

## What the coverage left out

None of the left-rated digests mention the apology from Taipei's mayor, Chiang Wan-an, following the police raid on a gay bar. The right-rated digest does not mention the police raid on the gay bar or the legalisation of same-sex marriage in Taiwan.

## How the sides framed it

### Left

- Eleven left-rated reports focused on the large turnout for Taiwan's Pride parade, with many stating tens of thousands gathered. These reports mentioned Taiwan's status as the first in Asia to legalise same-sex marriage in 2019. The Taipei Times digest included President William Lai calling for equality, dignity, and respect for all. The Examiner digest noted the parade occurred despite a recent raid on a Taipei gay bar. Taiwan News reported that organizers urged greater public support, citing discrimination against transgender people, and stated 3,800 people marched for transgender equality. Focus Taiwan also reported on the 3,800 people marching for transgender support.

### Centre

- Seven centre-rated reports highlighted that tens of thousands of people participated in Taiwan's Pride parade, describing it as one of Asia's largest annual celebrations of inclusivity. My Mother Lode, which provided a full report, mentioned the parade followed a police raid on a gay bar in Taipei earlier this month, detailing the incident and the community's reaction. This report also included quotes from participants, such as Jonel Malinao, a Filipino working in Taiwan, and Billie Chang, a student discussing ongoing acceptance challenges.

### Right

- The single right-rated report stated that tens of thousands of people gathered for Taiwan's Pride parade, noting it as one of Asia's largest annual celebrations of inclusivity. It mentioned participants waving rainbow flags and banners.

**Provisional coverage gap:** right. The watch is not closed, so this is not yet a settled blindspot finding.
