Anil Kishen, the dean of the University of Toronto's faculty of dentistry, has voluntarily stepped down. His resignation follows an investigation into his use of antisemitic imagery in course materials. The university's vice-president and provost, Trevor Young, stated that Kishen resigned immediately. An investigation found that Kishen did not intend to promote antisemitism and had limited knowledge of the images' history. The review also indicated that community members were divided on Kishen's actions and his apology. Jewish advocacy organization B'nai Brith Canada shared images of the lecture materials, which included an illustration of a figure wrapped in an Israeli flag and rope, and another image of a man with a hooked nose swimming in money. Young stated that Kishen recognizes his use of the images caused pain and that many community members lost confidence in his ability to lead the faculty. Kishen has committed to further learning about antisemitism and has undergone training. He will continue as a tenured faculty member and is expected to return to full duties in the 2027-28 academic year. Acting dean Laura Tam will remain in her interim role while the university searches for a new dean. ## Disagreement on community reaction The University of Toronto stated that an investigation found community members were divided on Kishen's actions and apology. Trevor Young, the university's vice-president and provost, said, "Some community members accepted Dr. Kishen’s immediate apology, while others were deeply hurt by the use of the images." He also noted, "He recognizes that many community members have lost confidence in his ability to continue to lead the faculty of dentistry." ## What the coverage left out None of the left-rated or centre-rated digests mention the specific finding that Anil Kishen "had a limited understanding" of antisemitic tropes, a detail noted in the right-rated digests. The right-rated digests do not mention that Kishen will remain at the university as a tenured faculty member or that acting dean Laura Tam will continue in her interim role. ## Who covered it Shares of the 27 covering outlets with a published leaning rating: - Left: 74% (20) - Centre: 15% (4) - Right: 11% (3) 2 of 29 covering outlets carried no usable leaning rating and were excluded from those percentages.
