# US Expels Two Iranian UN Delegates After Ignoring Orders

*Diplomats remained in New York following the UN General Assembly, prompting a State Department directive to leave.*

**Scores for the source reporting** (0-100, assessing the original journalism this article was written from, not this write-up):

- Trust 42 of 100, higher is better. Central claim attributed to Axios, a US official, and AFP, with two independent outlets corroborating.
- Craft 57 of 100, higher is better. Most outlets are digests; one full report provides limited detail. Some outlets mention Rubio, others do not.
- Hype 41 of 100, lower is better. Headlines use strong language like 'kicked out' and 'expelled' for a story with limited detail.

**The short version**

- The US expelled two members of Iran's UN delegation for remaining in New York after being ordered to leave.
- One delegate departed on Friday night and the second on Saturday morning.
- US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth stated the operation against Tehran would not be indefinite.
- No centre-rated outlets reported on this story.

The United States expelled two members of Iran's delegation to the United Nations. These delegates remained in New York after the UN General Assembly had concluded, despite orders from the US State Department for the delegation to leave the country. A US official told Axios that the order was renewed on Friday after it was discovered the two delegates had not yet departed. One delegate left on Friday night, and the second departed on Saturday morning.

US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth stated that the US operation against Tehran would not continue indefinitely. His remarks came amid heightened tensions around the Strait of Hormuz, where Iranian state television reported an explosion involving an oil tanker on Saturday. Iranian state-linked media also reported that the country's air defenses had engaged a "hostile" aircraft over Qeshm Island.

## Disagreement on timing of departure orders

While most reports indicate the delegates left on Friday night and Saturday morning following a renewed order, Source 16 states a US official claimed one delegate was sent away Friday night and the other on Saturday. Source 20 reports that two Iranian UN delegation members left New York on Friday night and Saturday morning, days after the State Department ordered their departure.

## What the coverage left out

None of the centre-rated outlets reported on this story. The right-rated reports did not mention US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth's statement that the US operation against Tehran would not continue indefinitely, nor his assertion that Washington maintains control of the Strait of Hormuz.

## How the sides framed it

### Left

- The left-rated reports led with the expulsion of the two Iranian UN delegates. Source 7, citing Axios, stated the US authorities "departed two members of the Iranian delegation participating in the United Nations General Assembly for failure to comply with immediate departure orders after the meetings in New York." Source 8, also citing the State Department, reported that the United States had "kicked out" two members of the Iranian delegation who attended the UN General Assembly after they ignored an order to leave the country.

### Centre

No separate framing summary.

### Right

- Right-rated reports focused on the expulsion of the Iranian diplomats for ignoring orders. Source 9, citing the State Department, stated the United States had "kicked out" two members of the Iranian delegation who attended the UN General Assembly after they ignored an order to leave the country. Source 14's headline read: "IRANIAN DIPLOMATS KICKED OUT OF U.S. AFTER IGNORING ORDER TO LEAVE." Source 21 quoted an official stating, "Secretary Rubio means business. Two more members of the Iranian delegation were found still in New York long after the UN General Assembly had passed. They have now been kicked out of the country," according to the Axios report.

**Provisional coverage gap:** left. The watch is not closed, so this is not yet a settled blindspot finding.
