A survey commissioned by the Canadian government found that antisemitism is widespread among Jewish university students. The study, conducted late last year, asked respondents about their experiences on campus. The majority reported either witnessing or directly experiencing antisemitic incidents during the previous year.
The survey was referenced in reports from three left-rated outlets and one right-rated outlet. The right-rated digest described antisemitism as a "persistent and, at some Canadian postsecondary institutions, normalized feature of campus life." The left-rated digests did not use the word "normalized."
Disagreement on the scale of antisemitism
The right-rated digest reported that nearly all Jewish students surveyed had experienced or witnessed at least one antisemitic incident in the previous year. The left-rated digests did not specify a proportion, stating only that the vast majority of respondents had done so.
What the coverage left out
No centre-rated outlet published an account of the survey. None of the digests below mention whether the survey asked respondents to specify the nature or frequency of the antisemitic incidents they experienced or witnessed. The unrated digest included a statement linking antisemitism on campuses to broader attacks on Jewish institutions, but this was not carried by any rated outlet.

How each side covered it
Our own reading of the reporting listed below, written from the outlets’ articles rather than quoted from them. The reasoning is set out on our methodology page.
Left
22 rated outlets
- The three left-rated digests led on the finding that the vast majority of Jewish students had experienced or witnessed antisemitism on campus. None of the digests mentioned the word "normalized" or specified a proportion of respondents affected. All three carried the same wording: "the vast majority of Jewish students who responded to a government-commissioned survey late last year said they had experienced or witnessed antisemitism on campus."
Centre
10 rated outlets
- Centre-rated outlets led on the survey’s finding that most Jewish university students in Canada reported experiencing or witnessing antisemitism. All ten reports carried the figure that over two-thirds of respondents said their university does not take antisemitism seriously. Nine digests and the CTV News article included that the survey was commissioned by the last special envoy on antisemitism before the role was terminated.
- The CTV News report and The Globe & Mail digest noted that a fifth of respondents reported physical violence directed at Jews on campus. CTV News also specified the survey was conducted in November and December 2025, involved 900 students, and was overseen by the Association for Canadian Studies. Only CTV News mentioned the call from Jewish academics for universities to enforce conduct codes and record discrimination data.
- None of the centre-rated digests included the number of survey respondents or the months the survey was conducted. The Globe & Mail digest did not mention the termination of the special envoy role, and no digest quoted the academics’ call for policy changes.
