Centrist news sources

Every news outlet a named rating organisation has placed in the centre, and what a centre rating does and does not mean — it is a statement about story selection and language, not a certificate of accuracy.

MediaBias News holds 816 news outlets that a named rating organisation places in the centre — 50% of the 1,625 outlets in our records carrying any leaning rating at all. A centre rating describes story selection and language, not accuracy: the two are rated separately and shown separately here.

What the rating is not

It is not a warning label, and the opposite rating is not a certificate. The three organisations behind these placements measure story selection and language over time, which is a different question from whether a given report is accurate — that is rated separately, on a separate scale, and shown separately on every row below. An outlet can be rated centrist and have among the highest factual records anyone awards.

It is also not unanimous. Of the 354 outlets here that two or more of the three organisations have both rated, about 57% get different verdicts — though almost all of those are one step on the scale rather than a reversal. Only 2 carry placements on opposite sides of centre, one organisation saying left where another says right. That is why every outlet page here shows all the ratings we hold instead of averaging them into a single number, and why this page names the rater on every line. The full count, and why they differ.

The useful question is not whether a source leans. It is what a story looks like when sources with different leanings report it, which is what the front page is for and what the method describes.

The centrist outlets, by how far over

The rating organisations' own level, not ours. Each name links to what we hold on that publisher: every rating with its author, factual reliability, ownership where it is on record, and the stories we have seen it cover.

Questions

What makes a news source centrist?

A rating organisation places an outlet in the centre when its story selection and language do not consistently favour either side. It is not a judgement about accuracy, and it is not a recommendation — three organisations rate factual reliability on a separate scale, and an outlet can be centrist and unreliable, or leaning and highly accurate.

Who decides which news sources lean which way?

Three organisations do most of this work and publish their reasoning: AllSides, Ad Fontes Media and Media Bias/Fact Check. Every rating on this page carries the name of the organisation that made it. MediaBias News rates no outlet itself; what it measures is how far apart the coverage of a given story turned out to be.

Do the rating organisations agree with each other?

Not always. Of the 354 outlets in our records that two or more of them have both rated, about 57% carry different verdicts — nearly all of them one step apart on the same side of centre. Only 2 land on opposite sides of centre. Where they differ, the outlet's page here shows every rating we hold rather than picking one.

How many centrist outlets are on this page?
