How each side covered it

Our own reading of the reporting listed below, written from the outlets’ articles rather than quoted from them. The reasoning is set out on our methodology page.

Left

47 rated outlets

  • Reports from the left led on the film's win and its potential Oscar trajectory. Twelve of the 22 left-rated reports mentioned that La Bola Negra won the People's Choice Award at TIFF. The film's directors, Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi, were named in 11 of these reports. Centre

26 rated outlets

  • Centre outlets, including City News, CTV News and digests from CFJC Today, WBAL, Hola News and others, reported that 'La Bola Negra' received the People’s Choice Award at the Toronto International Film Festival. They noted the film is directed by Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi and follows three gay men in Spain.
  • City News and CTV News added that the People’s Choice win is traditionally a predictor of Oscar attention. Their reports explained that this year the Platform Award provides a direct route to Academy Award eligibility and listed other festival winners such as ‘Angh’ and ‘Sunburn’. They also reproduced a statement from filmmaker Cody Lightning about his personal loss.
  • Digest summaries from the centre outlets uniformly described the film as a Spanish queer epic and highlighted its Oscar‑contender reputation, but they did not mention the Platform Award’s new eligibility rule, the list of other prize‑winners, or Lightning’s remarks. No centre outlet quoted the directors or other participants beyond the basic award announcement.

Right

5 rated outlets

  • All four right‑rated outlets reported that the Spanish film won the Toronto International Film Festival’s public award. The Toronto Sun’s digest added that the film stars Miguel Bernardeau, Penélope Cruz and Glenn Close. Both abc and EL Español identified the directors as Los Javis, and EL Español noted the film will represent Spain at the Oscars.
  • Page Six’s digest placed the win within a broader festival wrap, mentioning that some titles gained momentum while others saw award prospects fade. The abc digest described the ‘black ball’ as expanding like a planet across the Atlantic and highlighted the public award as the contest’s most emblematic honour, quoting Javier Ambrossi’s reaction. EL Español’s digest quoted the directors calling the film a farewell letter and stressed its Oscar‑submission role.
  • None of the right‑rated digests mention a cost estimate for the film, audience‑size figures for the festival, or detailed critical reviews beyond the award announcement. They also omit any direct interview with the filmmakers apart from the brief quoted line in EL Español’s digest.
