Missing from the right

Only 27 of the 211 outlets with a published leaning rating that ran this story are rated right.

A reader who follows the right would not have seen this. We report the absence rather than explain it: outlets choose what to cover for many reasons, and we have no evidence about which one applies here.

Former Illinois Deputy Sean Grayson died in prison on 23 August 2026. He was serving a 20-year sentence for the 2024 shooting death of Sonya Massey. Grayson had been convicted of second-degree murder.

Grayson had been seeking medical release from prison, citing stage 4 cancer. His attorneys had filed for release under the Joe Coleman Act in May. Massey's family stated that Grayson's death does not bring Sonya back, and wished his family peace.

Grayson maintained that Massey attacked him with a pot of boiling water. According to reports, Massey had called police to report a prowler, and Grayson entered her home to question her. Massey had a pot of boiling water on the stove. Grayson directed her to remove it, and as she did, he drew his weapon and fired three times, striking Massey in the head. A letter from Milhiser stated that Grayson's temper and willingness to escalate minor misunderstandings showed he posed a danger.

Disagreement on Grayson's claims

Grayson maintained that Massey attacked him with a pot of boiling water. ABC7 Chicago reported that in his hand-written application for medical release, Grayson did not show remorse and maintained this claim. The same report noted that Milhiser's letter pointed out there was a kitchen island and several feet between the pair when Grayson fired.

What the coverage left out

None of the left-rated digests mention that Grayson had been seeking medical release due to stage 4 cancer. None of the centre-rated reports mention that a state panel had unanimously denied Grayson's request for early medical release three weeks prior to his death.

How each side covered it

Our own reading of the reporting listed below, written from the outlets’ articles rather than quoted from them. The reasoning is set out on our methodology page.

Left

53 rated outlets

  • All nine left‑rated outlets reported that Sean Grayson, the former Sangamon County sheriff’s deputy convicted of murdering Sonya Massey, died in prison. The spokesman‑Review’s full report quoted his attorney Daniel Fultz confirming the death. NBC News’s digest, Chicago Sun Times’s digest, nprillinois.org’s digest, The Independent’s digest, USA Today’s digest, NBC Boston’s digest, St Louis Post‑Dispatch’s digest and NBC Washington’s digest each led on his death.
  • Several digests added that Grayson had stage 4 rectal cancer that had spread to his liver and lungs and that he had asked a three‑person state panel for early medical release, which the panel denied unanimously. The spokesman‑Review noted his 20 year sentence for second‑degree murder, identified him as white and described Massey as a Black mother who called 911. nprillinois.org’s digest mentioned the 20 year sentence.
  • The spokesman‑Review was the only outlet that provided details of Grayson’s hearing before the Illinois Prisoner Review Board, the 3 0 vote, his diagnoses of stage 3 colon cancer and additional cancers, and his prior law‑enforcement record. None of the other digests mentioned the board vote count, the specific diagnoses, the judge’s name, or the background of the sheriff’s office changes.

Of the 211 outlets on this story carrying a published leaning rating, 25% are rated left, 62% are rated centre, 13% are rated right. Is Former Deputy Sean Grayson Dies in Prison left or right?
Neither side dominates it. A story is not left or right in any case; the outlets that carried it are what carry ratings.
Is the coverage of Former Deputy Sean Grayson Dies in Prison biased?
Former Deputy Sean Grayson Dies in Prison is one event reported by 244 outlets, and this page does not rate the story as biased or unbiased. What it publishes is the spread: which outlets ran it, where named rating organisations place each of them on the spectrum, and what each side chose to lead with. A leaning rating describes an outlet's record over time, not this article, and the two should not be run together.
Which side is not reporting Former Deputy Sean Grayson Dies in Prison?
