Paleontologists have identified Herugavialis cairensis, a new species of extinct crocodile, from 45-million-year-old fossils found in Egypt's Mokattam Formation. The limestone used for the Great Sphinx was quarried from this formation, and a key fossil skull shares a missing snout tip with the monument.
