Michigan Sen. Elissa Slotkin wrote to Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Joint Chiefs Chair Gen. Dan Caine on 18 August 2026 asking them to confirm that federal troops will not be sent to polling places during the November midterm elections. The Pentagon said it would reply directly to Slotkin.
