The 60-day US-Iran memorandum of understanding expired on 17 August 2026 with no extension announced. Donald Trump called on Iran to "put up the white flag of surrender" and threatened to bomb Oman if it interfered with reopening the Strait of Hormuz. Iran denied a direct backchannel with the IRGC.
