West Virginia has one of the highest house fire death rates in the US, averaging 32 deaths annually from 2009 to 2023. A 2025 audit found the State Fire Commission had never produced a mandated fire-prevention plan, despite statutory requirements dating to 1976. The current marshal says a plan is now being drafted.
