Overnight strikes between Russia and Ukraine killed seven people and injured dozens more, according to local authorities. In Russia’s Belgorod region, Ukrainian drone attacks killed five people and injured about two dozen, including a 4-year-old boy. The regional administration said the strikes damaged 29 apartment blocks, five private houses, administrative buildings and unspecified commercial facilities.

In Ukraine, Russian missiles struck a high-rise apartment block in Kharkiv’s Saltivskyi district, killing two people and injuring 13, regional head Oleh Syniehubov said. Eight more people were injured in Odesa after dozens of missiles and drones hit the city and surrounding region, local administration head Oleh Kiper reported. Russia’s defence ministry claimed its strikes targeted drone warehouses in Kharkiv and fuel depots in Odesa, and said it shot down 153 Ukrainian drones overnight.

Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has repeatedly asked the U.S. and other countries to send more Patriot air defence systems, arguing they are critical for protecting civilians. Zelenskyy has also sought permission to use Elon Musk’s Starlink satellite system to guide strikes inside Russia. Ukrainian forces have continued long-range drone attacks on Russian energy infrastructure and other targets, including the country’s largest online retailer, Wildberries.

Disagreement on the death toll

Most outlets reported seven deaths in the overnight strikes. MondialNews, however, reported only two deaths and 31 injuries, citing Anadolu Ajansı. The discrepancy was not explained in the reports.
