What this story says
- More than 50 parents and spouses of active-duty U.S. service members have been detained since President Trump’s second term began, according to an Associated Press investigation.
- At least six of those detained have been deported, and eight remain in federal immigration custody, though the actual number is likely higher as the government does not track these cases.
- The detentions have forced military members to take leave, delay deployments, or care for children alone, with some families considering leaving the U.S. to reunite with deported relatives.

Missing from the right
Only 11 of the 107 outlets with a published leaning rating that ran this story are rated right.
A reader who follows the right would not have seen this. We report the absence rather than explain it: outlets choose what to cover for many reasons, and we have no evidence about which one applies here.
Since President Donald Trump began his second term in January 2025, U.S. immigration authorities have detained more than 50 parents and spouses of active-duty military service members. The figure comes from an Associated Press investigation, which also found that at least six of those detained have been deported. Eight remain in federal immigration custody.
The Department of Homeland Security does not compile data on these cases, according to its statement to the AP. The investigation relied on federal court records, media coverage, and interviews with family members and attorneys. The Pentagon declined to comment on the findings.
Parents and spouses of military personnel have historically been shielded from deportation under bipartisan policies. The AP reported that the Trump administration’s approach marks a reversal, even from his first term. A policy implemented in April 2025 states that "military service alone does not exempt aliens from the consequences of violating U.S. immigration laws."
The detentions have disrupted military families. Air Force Tech. Sgt. Wendy Gbeve said her father, Luis Alberto Ramirez Zavala, was deported to Mexico after being detained during a routine immigration interview. His wife, a legal permanent resident, is considering moving to Mexico to be with him, which would leave Gbeve without childcare if she and her husband, also in the Air Force, were deployed.
Army Staff Sgt. Alexis Jaramillo, an aviation operations specialist, is on administrative leave to care for his 5-year-old stepson after his Brazilian wife, Maisa Lopes Eliaser, was detained during an immigration appointment. Jaramillo said he has no one to help with childcare. At least one active-duty soldier delayed a deployment after her husband was detained, leaving no one to care for their 5-year-old son, according to court records.
What the coverage left out
No right-rated outlet ran this story, according to the reports printed below. None of the digests or reports mentioned whether the detentions have affected military recruitment or retention, though the AP noted that the military continues to advertise immigration benefits for enlistees’ families. The AP also reported that experts warn the policy could undermine military preparedness, but no outlet provided specific data on this claim.
Coverage settled. We checked this 15 times and stopped on 10 Aug 2026, 23:01. The figures above are what it finished at.
How each side covered it
Our own reading of the reporting listed below, written from the outlets’ articles rather than quoted from them. The reasoning is set out on our methodology page.
Left
32 rated outlets
- Left-rated outlets led on the detention of over 50 parents and spouses of active-duty U.S. military personnel since 2025, with at least six deported. The Associated Press report, carried by all 12 outlets, established that the government does not track these cases. The Toronto Star, Seattle Times, Las Vegas Sun, Inquirer, Times-Tribune, Hindu, Indian Express, HuffPost and Mercury News digests all noted the rollback of longstanding protections for military families.
- The Associated Press report quoted affected service members, including Army Sgt. Hedar Leonel Turcios Juarez and Air Force Tech. Sgt. Wendy Gbeve, describing the impact on deployments and childcare. It also cited Department of Homeland Security statements that military service does not exempt individuals from immigration law consequences. The Independent digest mentioned the historical shielding of military families from enforcement.
- None of the digests from left-rated outlets omitted the number of detentions or the policy shift announced in April 2025. The Associated Press report included details of criminal histories for some detainees, provided by DHS, but the digests did not uniformly carry this information.
Centre
64 rated outlets
- The two centre-rated reports, one of which was the AP’s full article and the other a digest, led on the same core facts: the number of detentions, deportations, and ongoing custody cases. Washington Top News republished the AP’s full report, which included the same details and quotes as the left-rated outlets.
- The centre-rated digest from WRAL News summarised the AP’s findings without additional framing. It noted that the detentions have left military members without emotional support and caretakers for their children, and that some have had to take leave or delay deployments.
Right
11 rated outlets
- The right-rated outlets reported that since 2025, the Trump administration detained over 50 parents and spouses of active-duty US military personnel. All ten digests carried the figure and identified the detentions as part of a broader immigration crackdown.
- Nine of the ten digests described the detentions as a rollback of immigration protections for military families. They attributed the findings to an Associated Press investigation. None of the digests named any of the detained individuals or quoted their relatives.
- One digest, from ArcaMax Publishing, did not mention the military families story. It focused instead on unrelated immigration fraud cases.
Questions about this coverage
- How did the left and right cover Trump administration detained over 50 military family members since 2025?
- Of the 107 outlets on this story carrying a published leaning rating, 30% are rated left, 61% are rated centre, 9% are rated right. Those percentages are shares of the rated outlets, not of every outlet that ran it, which was 139. The sections above set out what each side emphasised, in its own terms.
- Is Trump administration detained over 50 military family members since 2025 left or right?
- Neither side dominates it. Of the 107 rated outlets on this story, 30% are rated left, 61% are rated centre, 9% are rated right, and no side holds the 70% this site would want before calling a field one-sided. A story is not left or right in any case; the outlets that carried it are what carry ratings.
- Is the coverage of Trump administration detained over 50 military family members since 2025 biased?
- Trump administration detained over 50 military family members since 2025 is one event reported by 139 outlets, and this page does not rate the story as biased or unbiased. What it publishes is the spread: which outlets ran it, where named rating organisations place each of them on the spectrum, and what each side chose to lead with. A leaning rating describes an outlet's record over time, not this article, and the two should not be run together.
- Which side is not reporting Trump administration detained over 50 military family members since 2025?
- When we first saw this story, outlets rated right had barely covered it. Coverage accretes for hours after an event, so that is where to look rather than a verdict — the split above is the current count, and it is the one to read.
- Which outlets covered Trump administration detained over 50 military family members since 2025?
- 139 that we know of, every one of them listed further up this page with a link to its own report and to what we hold on the publisher. Nothing here is a summary of somebody else's summary: the outlets are named so the original reporting can be read.
- How many military family members have been detained under Trump’s immigration policy?
- More than 50 parents and spouses of active-duty U.S. service members have been detained since President Trump began his second term in 2025, according to an Associated Press investigation. At least six have been deported, and eight remain in federal immigration custody.
- Why are these detentions happening now?
- The Trump administration rolled back protections for military families as part of its broader immigration enforcement agenda. A policy implemented in April 2025 states that military service alone does not exempt individuals from immigration law consequences.
- How have the detentions affected military families?
- Service members have had to take leave, delay deployments, or care for children alone. Some families are considering leaving the U.S. to reunite with deported relatives, which could leave military personnel without childcare during deployments.
- Which outlets covered this story?
- Left-rated outlets like the Associated Press, The Toronto Star, and The Seattle Times, as well as centre-rated outlets like Washington Top News and WRAL News, covered the story. No right-rated outlet ran it, according to the reports below.
