Missing from the right

Only 2 of the 22 outlets with a published leaning rating that ran this story are rated right.

A reader who follows the right would not have seen this. We report the absence rather than explain it: outlets choose what to cover for many reasons, and we have no evidence about which one applies here.

U.S. President Donald Trump signed an executive order to rename Lake Ontario as 'Lake America.' The order stated that the U.S. Department of the Interior should rename the lake and that the U.S. Geological Survey had officially designated the change in electronic documents. Trump announced the move on Thursday afternoon, stating it was 'effective immediately.'

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney rejected the executive order. He stated that Canadians will continue to call the lake 'Lake Ontario,' a name he said Canadians know 'then, now and always.' Carney explained that the name 'Lake Ontario' originates from the Wendat word 'Ontari'io,' meaning 'the lake is beautiful, the lake is big.' He also noted that the name is more than 400 years old and predates both the Confederation of Canada and the U.S. Declaration of Independence.

Disagreement on renaming

U.S. President Donald Trump stated that the renaming of Lake Ontario to 'Lake America' was official and effective immediately, with necessary papers filed and people notified. Trump posted a letter on Truth Social from USGS director Ned Mamula stating the change was official in electronic documents. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, however, stated that Canadians will continue to call it 'Lake Ontario, then, now and always,' and that the name is over 400 years old and predates both Canadian Confederation and the U.S. Declaration of Independence.
