Taiwan envoy Lee Yi-yang boycotts Nagasaki atomic bomb memorial over seating
Taiwan’s top representative in Japan, Lee Yi-yang, boycotted the 81st anniversary memorial of the Nagasaki atomic bombing after his delegation was not seated among diplomatic missions. Nagasaki officials said the seating was not clearly distinguished as nondiplomatic, while Lee called the arrangement an insult to Taiwan’s sovereignty.

Taiwan launches Han Kuang military exercise amid China threats
Taiwan began its annual Han Kuang military exercise on 5 August 2026, running combat drills for troops and reservists to practise repelling an attack. Civilians will face air raid drills and temporary mobile internet slowdowns. China, which claims Taiwan as its territory, has repeatedly threatened to use force to seize the island.
