Nvidia released Nemotron 3.5 Lightning, an open-source artificial intelligence model that the company says can run on a single graphics processing unit. The model is available for download, modification and use without charge or permission. Nvidia described it as lightweight and designed for autonomous agents, software that performs tasks in the background.

Jensen Huang, Nvidia’s chief executive, said in an interview with Axios that open-source AI benefits hardware sales. "Free AI should be great for hardware," he said. "Free AI should be great for chips." The release follows Huang’s first post on X, in which he argued that open models strengthen safety, accelerate innovation and enable sovereignty. He also published an open letter opposing restrictions on open-source AI development.

Nvidia said companies including CrowdStrike, CodeRabbit and Harvey have tested and customised the model. The company also introduced NeMo Switchyard, software that determines the most cost-effective AI model for a given task. Nemotron 3.5 Lightning is available through Hugging Face and Nvidia’s website.
