NASA's Roman Space Telescope began its mission to study the universe on Sunday, launched from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida atop a SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket. The observatory is named for Nancy Grace Roman, NASA's first chief astronomer, who championed space telescopes. Its mission is expected to collect vast amounts of data, significantly more than the Hubble Space Telescope has gathered over its operational lifetime.

The telescope is equipped with a wide-field camera and advanced detectors designed to scan broad swaths of the cosmos. Scientists anticipate it will shed new light on dark matter and dark energy, the mysterious components that shape the universe's structure and expansion. Roman will also search for exoplanets, potentially discovering thousands orbiting other stars.

A key component of the Roman Space Telescope is its primary mirror, which was originally built for a spy satellite and later donated to NASA. This mirror, along with the telescope's instruments, will enable it to capture ultra-sharp images and gather data at an unprecedented rate, potentially resolving current tensions in cosmological models.

Disagreements in reporting

Reports differ on the exact cost of the mission. CBS News states the mission is a $4.3 billion project, while Channel News Asia and Blue Water Healthy Living report it as a roughly $4 billion project. The launch date is also presented differently, with CBS News specifying Sunday, August 30, while Dnevni list Danas states August 30.

What the coverage left out

None of the centre or left-rated reports mention the specific time of the launch on Sunday, August 30, beyond stating the day.

How each side covered it

Our own reading of the reporting listed below, written from the outlets’ articles rather than quoted from them. The reasoning is set out on our methodology page.

Left

98 rated outlets

  • The left-rated report from Dnevni list Danas highlighted the telescope's potential to solve mysteries of the universe, including dark matter and dark energy. It quoted mission scientists, including Dr. Julie McEnery, discussing the telescope's ability to conduct the largest census of planets around other stars and to scan vast segments of the sky. The report also detailed the unusual origin of the telescope's mirror, donated by the National Reconnaissance Office, and noted Nancy Grace Roman's pioneering role as NASA's first female chief astronomer, overcoming gender-based obstacles.

Centre

191 rated outlets

  • Centre-rated reports from outlets including CBS News, Reuters, and Popular Science focused on the launch itself and the telescope's primary scientific objectives. They frequently mentioned its mission to map billions of galaxies, probe dark matter and dark energy, and discover exoplanets. Several reports, such as CBS News, detailed the telescope's capabilities in comparison to Hubble, noting its speed and data collection capacity. The origin of the mirror from a spy satellite was also a recurring detail, as was the naming of the telescope after Nancy Grace Roman. Some reports, like CBS News, delved into the scientific implications for understanding the Hubble Tension and the standard model of cosmology.

Right

61 rated outlets

  • Right-rated outlets reported NASA's launch of the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope. The digests stated the telescope will map the cosmos, investigate dark matter and dark energy, and search for exoplanets. Some reports mentioned it is a successor to the Hubble telescope.
  • Several digests noted the telescope's mission will last five to ten years. One report stated the telescope is a thousand times faster than Hubble, while another said it has 100 times the vision.
  • The digests did not mention the cost estimate for the telescope. One digest included a photograph of the Orion spacecraft, unrelated to the Roman telescope launch.

Questions about this coverage

How did the left and right cover NASA's Roman Space Telescope Launches on Mission to Study Universe?
Of the 350 outlets on this story carrying a published leaning rating, 28% are rated left, 55% are rated centre, 17% are rated right. Those percentages are shares of the rated outlets, not of every outlet that ran it, which was 655. The sections above set out what each side emphasised, in its own terms.
Is NASA's Roman Space Telescope Launches on Mission to Study Universe left or right?
Neither side dominates it. Of the 350 rated outlets on this story, 28% are rated left, 55% are rated centre, 17% are rated right, and no side holds the 70% this site would want before calling a field one-sided. A story is not left or right in any case; the outlets that carried it are what carry ratings.
Is the coverage of NASA's Roman Space Telescope Launches on Mission to Study Universe biased?
NASA's Roman Space Telescope Launches on Mission to Study Universe is one event reported by 655 outlets, and this page does not rate the story as biased or unbiased. What it publishes is the spread: which outlets ran it, where named rating organisations place each of them on the spectrum, and what each side chose to lead with. A leaning rating describes an outlet's record over time, not this article, and the two should not be run together.
Which outlets covered NASA's Roman Space Telescope Launches on Mission to Study Universe?
655 that we know of, every one of them listed further up this page with a link to its own report and to what we hold on the publisher. Nothing here is a summary of somebody else's summary: the outlets are named so the original reporting can be read.
What is the primary mission of the Roman Space Telescope?
The Roman Space Telescope's primary mission is to study dark matter, dark energy, and exoplanets. It aims to collect vast amounts of data to help scientists understand the universe's structure, expansion, and the potential for life beyond our solar system.
How does the Roman Space Telescope compare to the Hubble Space Telescope?
The Roman Space Telescope is expected to collect significantly more data than the Hubble Space Telescope. While Hubble focuses on individual objects, Roman will scan broad swaths of the sky, enabling it to observe billions of stars and galaxies much faster.
What is unique about the Roman Space Telescope's mirror?
The telescope's primary mirror was originally built for a spy satellite and was later donated to NASA. This donated mirror, after modifications, allows Roman to capture ultra-sharp images and observe fainter objects than would have been possible with a newly manufactured mirror of the same size.
Who is Nancy Grace Roman and why is the telescope named after her?
Nancy Grace Roman was NASA's first chief astronomer and played a crucial role in the development of space telescopes, including Hubble. She is often referred to as 'the mother of Hubble' for her advocacy and leadership in space science.
